I wasn't saying we don't need a defender, I was saying we need one for cover and not to affect the team.

Its good that things are being done properly these days, of course we need a back up centre-half if Mcshane is off but why split such a great pairing, I wouldn't drop either Hobbs or Chester for Gerrard if he returned, we need an up and coming centre-back from the lower leagues or another Man U unknown as cover maybe Joycey can help us out with that again

How on earth can you say you wouldn't drop either Hobbs or Chester??

What happens if one of them loses form like did Fryatt earlier in the season?

The point is if you have a strong squad with competition for places you simply play the ones that are playing the best. That challenges the players to always produce their best and the team, as a whole, will perform better.

One thing is for certain (in my eyes) while we do have a very good pair of centre backs, we are thin on cover.

McShane may or may not be around after January and isn't very convincing anyway.

Other than that we have just Cooper as a realistic option.

We could really use another centre back. He would join as cover initially, but still must be good enough to play regualy if Hobbs or Chester get banned/injured/lose form.

If McShane leaves, we simply must get another body in to replace him.

We need to look at getting another striker in the building to add to the competition up front.

I agree with the above that we need to replace McShane if he goes. We don't want Hobbs and Chester to get complacent.

I think we have a good array of options in midfiedl with Garcia & Oli returning. Both can do a decent job in this division. I'd keep Brady incase Stewart is injured because it's another outlet and maybe one day he'll learn to swing the ball in the box rather than try to beat the defenders and do it himself.

Agreed and that will happen. But as cover we have Liam Cooper who is more than good enough and Evans can also play there if required.

Under no circumstance should we rely on Evans to play in defence. He's too important to the midfield. We need proper cover, be it McShane, Cooper and Dudgeon or someone else plus Cooper and Dudgeon.

I hope Barmby decides to carry on as caretaker until the end of the season and then reviews his position then. As a player, he always said he would finish his playing career at his hometown club. He is doing that and has to be admired for his honesty and loyaty to both the club and the city. If he were to take the job on permanent now and it all went pete tong, he could be shown the door. Then all connections to the club could be severed and that would be a shame. At the end of the season, if things havn't turned out as well as he had wanted, he could hold his hands up and say 'Let someone else have a go'. Then continue as maybe assistant coach/player? Good luck to him anyway and I am sure he will continue to get the support of both players and fans. UTT

It looks like he's going to be our permanent manager on Friday.
