The way i always understood it as a kid was a pudding was something warm (like apple crumble and custard) and dessert was something cold like ice cream and cake. It seemed to be a seasonal thing mostly so both are fairly normal terms for me.

Or ice cream, or a lemon meringue, tart, cake etc. Some puddings aren't even desserts. It just doesn't work. Dessert covers everything.

It’s largely about context as well as regional variations bruv. For us northerners, it’s likely pudding at home, dessert when eating out. Same at home you’ll likely call your evening meal Tea, but if you go out, you go out to dinner.
