Or park up the steep hill between Nailsworth and the ground f you get there early enough. I intend rocking up around 11.30, parking on the hill (it is v steep!) and then getting a pint or two in the Green Man. The food is good and is cheap - but there's no red meat or burgers on sale.
All you need to know about tomorrow's opponents Forest Green Rovers entertain their near city neighbours Bristol Rovers in a live televised fixture on Bank Holiday Monday in what will be undoubtedly the biggest League attendance of their history. Forest Green Manager Ady Pennock has been to an FA Cup final and sampled European competition as first-team coach at Stoke City in the recent past but admits this will be one of the highlights of his career. “It will be a fantastic occasion and it is one the whole club have been looking forward to since the fixtures came out. I said to the chairman when I first came here that I would love to fill the stadium for a league game. "Obviously if we get big team in the FA Cup here that would be great, but hopefully we can fill the ground on Monday and show the club off to everyone there and the people watching on BT Sport.” There are a lot of playing connections between the two clubs. Forest Green defenders David Pipe and Danny Coles were team-mates at the Memorial Stadium for two campaigns in League One, while striker Matty Taylor swapped Nailsworth for the Gas during the summer. The most eye-catching confrontation could come in midfield, with Forest Green’s Rob Sinclair up against his older brother Stuart. The club was founded in 1889 as Forest Green by the local Nonconformist church minister. The club became founder members of the Mid Gloucestershire League in 1894. Then moved to the newly formed Stroud & District League in 1902 where they remained for 32 years, also playing in the Dursley & District League. They were founder members of the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League in 1922 alongside Cheltenham Town and won the league three times in 1938, 1950 and 1951. In 1968 they were founder members of the Gloucestershire County League where they remained for seven seasons when they earned promotion to the Hellenic League in 1975. The 1981–82 season saw the club win the Hellenic League championship and the FA Vase under manager Bob Mersell at Wembley, beating Rainworth Miners Welfare 3–0 in the final. The same season the club moved upwards into the Southern League where they finished third in their maiden season in the Midland Division. However in subsequent seasons the club failed to make much of an impact and in 1989 the club changed its name to Stroud F.C. in an attempt to revitalise the football club. The name was changed back to Forest Green Rovers for the 1992–93 season thanks to the introduction of new chairman and investor Trevor Horsley, who worked alongside Andy Coburn and new secretary Colin Peake to re-introduce the club's former title. The arrival of Horsley changed the fortunes of the club and performances on the pitch improved significantly as did the development of The Lawn. In 2006 the club moved 400 yards away to their new ground appropriately named The New Lawn. The Green’s most successful spell came under Jim Harvey who led them to their highest ever league finish of 8th in the 2007–08 season when they also reached the FA Cup 2nd round losing 3–2 against League One outfit Swindon Town. In 2008–09 they reached the FA Cup 3rd round for the first time but lost 3–4 to Derby County on 3 January 2009 after leading 2–0. This game also saw Forest Green record their highest ever attendance with 4,836 watching the match. In their latest game the Nailsworth team faced Aldershot away on Friday night. The away team were unchanged for the fourth game in a row. Aldershot took the lead on 37 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after David Pipe brought down Roberts, with Brett Williams converting from the spot kick which connected with Russell's body as the keeper dived the wrong way but was powerful enough to find its way into the net. Mark Molesley tried to set up Sam Hatton to double the lead early in the second half, but the midfielder drilled his shot just wide. The miss proved costly as the visitors won a corner down the other end of the pitch, allowing Rob Sinclair to deliver the ball for Hughes to rise high to head in the 58th minute equaliser, his third goal in four games. Anthony Tonkin almost set up a second for the home side, but his ball into the box failed to find any of his teammates. Dan Fitchett provided a late threat for the hosts after replacing Williams for the final 10 minutes, but was unable to put the team back in front late on, ensuring that the match finished in a draw. The result ensured that Forest Green remained unbeaten with 10 points from 4 games. Pennock said after the game, “I was disappointed with the first half, I thought we were poor. I said a few words at half time as you do and I thought we came out second half all guns blazing, that was much better. "It was a good test. To come away with a point I’d take that all day long. It is very pleasing. We’ve got a great game at home on Monday but I am very pleased with this performance and result. It was a first class result.” Talking about Monday’s game he went on, “It’s only about three points for me. It is a fantastic occasion for the football club. I said to the chairman when I first came that I would like to see the stadium in a league game as a full house and that is what we are going to get on Monday. “So I think it is breaking all of the records as well for a league attendance for us. Let’s just get the three points and then celebrate afterwards. Bristol Rovers will be up there at the end of the season and we know that. It’s a big game and it is so early in the season so if we can get three points it will be a big plus for us.” Pennock has no injury worries ahead of Monday’s match. Long-term absentees Aarran Racine and James Jennings miss out while Steve Arnold is available. The goalkeeper was on the bench for the first time this season on Friday at Aldershot. Summer signing, Kurtis Guthrie, won't feature as he is currently nursing a knee injury. There is a lengthy list of players who have reported for duty at both Forest Green and Bristol Rovers. There is of course little surprise in that given both club’s close geographical links. Defender Billy Clark made over 200 league appearances for the Pirates and also served Forest Green well in his time in Nailsworth. Oxford United and former Gas keeper Ryan Clarke had a season-long loan with Forest Green whilst Byron Anthony also spent time on loan at Nailsworth when a Cardiff player before joining the Gas. Kaid Mohamed who was on loan at the Memorial Stadium last season had a permanent spell at The New Lawn. Josh Low, Guy Ipoua and Dennis Bailey are other players to have represented both clubs. Sean Rigg progressed through the youth system with FGR before making his name with the Gas. Julian Alsop is another striker to have worn both outfit’s colours and David Mehew played for both too.
Don't forget the game is live on BT Sports or listen on Gas Player and of course tune into BBC Radio Bristol on FM frequency which starts at 1:00pm
Preview From FGR View It may only be August, but Forest Green are gearing up for one of their biggest games of the season on Monday, as Vanarama Conference newcomers Bristol Rovers visit The New Lawn (1pm). The Pirates and FGR will clash in a competitive fixture for the first time in their histories in a match that will be broadcast live on BT Sport. Ticket sale figures already indicate that the fixture will be the highest attended league game ever hosted by Forest Green with over 3,500 expected to be in attendance. Manager Ady Pennockâs FGR side are unbeaten so far this season having picked up three wins plus a point at Aldershot Town on Friday evening. Lee Hughesâ third strike of the season ensured Forest Green maintained their pleasing start to the campaign as we welcome a Bristol Rovers outfit who earned their first victory on Saturday â defeating last seasonâs Conference North champions, AFC Telford United, at their Memorial Stadium home. Mondayâs game is an all ticket fixture and tickets will therefore not be available to purchase on the day of the game. A park-and-ride facility will be in force and it is advised that supporters leave plenty of time when arriving, collecting tickets and when leaving the stadium. Forest Green and Bristol Rovers have faced each other many times before in pre-season friendlies. However the first ever league meeting between the two clubs promises to be an exciting one as the Pirates make the short 29 mile trip from Bristol to Nailsworth. Managerâs thoughts Ady Pennock spoke to the media after Fridayâs draw at Aldershot and was a happy man after a promising second half performance: He said: âI was disappointed with the first half â I thought we were poor. I said a few words at half time as you do and I thought we came out second half all guns blazing, that was much better. âIt was a good test. To come away with a point Iâd take that all day long. It is very pleasing. âWeâve got a great game at home on Monday but I am very pleased with this performance and result. It was a first class result.â His attentions are now fully focussed on this Mondayâs game. He went to watch Bristol Rovers in action on Saturday and is relishing testing his side in such a massive fixture. He added: âItâs only about three points for me. It is a fantastic occasion for the football club. âI said to the chairman when I first came that I would like to see the stadium in a league game as a full house and that is what we are going to get on Monday. âSo I think it is breaking all of the records as well for a league attendance for us. Letâs just get the three points and then celebrate afterwards. âBristol Rovers will be up there at the end of the season and we know that. Itâs a big game and it is so early in the season so if we can get three points it will be a big plus for us.â Team news Ady Pennock has named the same starting eleven for four consecutive matches so far this season and he has no fresh injury worries ahead of Mondayâs match. Long-term absentees Aarran Racine and James Jennings miss out while Steve Arnold is available. The goalkeeper was on the bench for the first time this season on Friday at Aldershot. Summer signing, Kurtis Guthrie, won't feature as he is currently nursing a knee injury. There will be two members of the FGR squad who will be lining up one of their former employers on Monday. Defensive duo David Pipe and Danny Coles both turned out for the Pirates in the Football League. Mondayâs visitors paid £50,000 to sign Pipe while Coles had a loan spell and permanent spell at the Memorial Stadium. Opposition A 1-0 win over newly promoted AFC Telford United on Saturday handed Bristol Rovers their first victory of the season after their relegation from League Two last term. The Gas were relegated into the Vanarama Conference after finishing in 23rd place. They were defeated by former Conference champions Mansfield Town on the last day and subsequently dropped out of the Football League. They go into Mondayâs tie 15th in the table with four points on the board from four games. They are currently six points behind FGR who sit second, two points behind table toppers FC Halifax Town who are the only team in the league with a 100 per cent record. Mondayâs visitors began the season with a televised 0-0 draw with Grimsby. Back-to-back defeats against Barnet and Altrincham followed ahead of Saturdayâs win over the Bucks in front of a crowd of 5,450 at the Memorial Stadium. They are managed by former Salisbury City boss Darrell Clarke who took charge at the Bristol club during last season â he couldnât help them secure their league status however after replacing experienced boss John Ward in the hot seat. Experienced goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall adds vital knowhow at the back. The Swindon based number one has a raft of experience from a variety of spells with different clubs in the Football League. In defence the Pirates have 19-year-old youth product Tom Lockyer to rely on as well as Neal Trotman who joined them on a short-term deal after a failed trial period at Cheltenham Town. The Pirates midfield includes Gloucester born Lee Mansell who joined in the summer having left Torquay â the other team relegated from League Two last season. His brother, Richard, plays for Bishopâs Cleeve while his sister used to play for the ladies team at Forest Green. Their attack is bolstered by former Southampton product Jamie White and Stoke City youngster Ryan Brunt. Their number 10 is a very recognisable face for FGR fans. Matty Taylor played over 90 times at The New Lawn and joined Bristol Rovers after being released by Forest Green at the end of last season. In the past week Pirates chairman Nick Higgs has called for new investors to come into the Memorial Stadium club. Also in the past few days long-term director and former chairman, Geoff Dunford, quit the club after 28 years of involvement. Player connections There is a lengthy list of players who have reported for duty at both Forest Green and Bristol Rovers. There is of course little surprise in that given both clubâs close geographical links. Defender Billy Clark made over 200 league appearances for the Pirates and also served Forest Green well in his time in Nailsworth. Meanwhile current Oxford United keeper Ryan Clarke had a season-long loan with FGR from Mondayâs opponents. Byron Anthony also spent time on loan at FGR while a Cardiff player and he went onto make over a 100 appearances for Bristol Rovers. Kaid Mohamed was on loan at the Memorial Stadium last term after a permanent spell at The New Lawn. Josh Low, Guy Ipoua and Dennis Bailey are other players to have represented both clubs. Sean Rigg progressed through the youth system with FGR before making his name with the Gas. Julian Alsop is another striker to have worn both outfitâs colours and David Mehew played for both too. To find out more about some of the names who have turned out for both sides â and some other links between the two teams â check out Mondayâs match day programme. You can find out more about Mondayâs edition below. Big turnouts at The New Lawn Forest Green have played their home football at The New Lawn since moving into the Nailsworth venue in the summer of 2006. In the process FGR moved just 400 yards up the road from their former home at The Lawn which had previously been used by Mondayâs visitors as a reserve team ground during the 1980s. Mondayâs tie is all set as being confirmed as being Forest Greenâs biggest ever recorded home league attendance in their 125 year history â it will certainly be the biggest league turnout since the club made The New Lawn their home. Previously the highest league attendance recorded at The New Lawn was in October 2006, only a few months after FGR moved into the ground. A visit from recently relegated Oxford United saw 3,021 in attendance. Oxford won 5-1 in a Friday night fixture that saw Rob Duffy score a hat-trick for the now current League Two side. Other noticeable league attendance highs at The New Lawn include an August Bank Holiday Monday clash in 2007 with Torquay United, watched by 2,382 fans which ended in a 2-2 draw. Over 2,300 were in attendance for a Boxing Day battle with Newport County in December 2012. 1,858 watched FGR and Luton do battle meanwhile last August. Another match up with Oxford United in Nailsworth saw over 2,000 show up to view a thrilling 3-3 draw which saw James Constable score twice from the penalty spot. That game was played in March 2009. The highest ever attendance for a match at The New Lawn came in an FA Cup third round classic against Championship outfit Derby County in January 2009. A crowd of 4,836 saw the Rams net a cruel last gasp winner in a tie they won 4-3. That match was the first time Forest Green had ever appeared in the third round of the world famous competition. Match programme Grab a copy of Mondayâs match programme from various locations around The New Lawn for £3. The third edition of the season again includes a vast number of different features that will provide you with plenty of match day reading. England C international James Norwood features as the main player interview as he reflects on his teamâs start to the season. The attacker also discusses how he is still learning off his peers despite ending the last two seasons as Forest Greenâs top goal scorer. Goalkeeper Paul White features in a question and answer session while there is another fans profile to take a look at too. Ady Pennock pens his pre-game notes. There is also all of the information you need to know about the dayâs visitors as well as an interview with Head of Youth, Scott Bartlett, looking back on the academy teams pre-season calendar. Tickets The fixture is an ALL TICKET game. Tickets will not be available to buy on the day of the game. Fans who need to collect their pre-paid for tickets at The New Lawn can do so from 10:30am on the day of the game when the ticket office will open. The ticket office will also be selling merchandise and it is advised that supporters collecting tickets leave plenty of time to do so as to avoid queuing before kick-off. Park-and-ride Car parking spaces at The New Lawn will be severely limited on Monday because of the large attendance and due to the BT Sport trucks that will take up space in the car park. Therefore it is strongly recommended that supporters use the park-and-ride facility that is being utilised for the fixture. A similar facility proved popular for our pre-season friendly with Manchester United in August 2012. Supporters are advised to park at Renishawâs in Woodchester where two coaches will be regularly transporting fans to The New Lawn every 15 minutes. The price to park here is £4. The coaches will be running before the game from 10am in the morning and the last coach will leave The New Lawn at 4:30pm. Cars that do park at The New Lawn will be double-parked. There is a small limited amount of space available for cars to park in at Nailsworth Primary School next to the stadium too. Hospitality Due to the higher than normal expected crowd, there are a number of changes to the pre-match hospitality that is on offer for supporters of both clubs. Bristol Rovers fans have been allocated access to The Green Man, Forest Greenâs very own on-site pub, which can hold up to 750 supporters. It will be open from 10:30am. Home supporters wishing to enjoy a pre-match drink with some food can visit the Carol Embrey Suite if they have a ticket for the East Stand. This will be open from 10:30am also. FGR home supporters who have tickets for the South Stand can enter the ground at 11am. Alcoholic beverages will be sold from the Devils Kitchen from here. Other FGR fans sitting in the East Stand can enjoy refreshments from the canteen in the concourse before the match. Turnstiles in the away end will also open at 11am. Bristol Rovers fans can make the most of refreshments from the canteens in their section of the ground although they will not be serving alcohol. Away fans can only purchase alcohol in The Green Man pub. After the match the sponsors man-of-the-match award will be presented in the Carol Embrey Suite. FGR fans are invited to attend the presentation which will be presented to a Forest Green player by Bob Hunt.
So what do Gasheads think - same lineup as v Telford or change it? Is there a place for the Beard? Cunnington or Brunt? Is Matty Taylor showing enough or is it time to give Jamie White a run out? And how about the back four - time for Trotman to cement his place over either Parkes or McChrystal?
So its game day lets hope its a good one and we get all three points I will be watching on BT Sports so will have my Kindle or Laptop with me to keep this thread up to date the best I can for the fans who live away from Bristol.
