Not too many on Bali apparently
After the bombings which almost destroyed the tourist economy the local mainly hinduists were allowed to force most of the Muslims out

Met up with my daughter there for two and a half weeks last August with the rest of the family, she'd been at Uni in Melbourne for 4 months before travelling, New Zealand, Bali, Singapore, Thailand, home.
Some great surfing beaches in the south, some great diving/snorkelling sites in the North East and the Volcano trek (Mount Batur) to see the sunrise fantastic if Mount Agung next door has stopped erupting. Coffee plantations interesting to see the Luwak Coffee, most expensive in the world. Coffee bean eaten by a monkey, digests soft outer, poops the coffee bean which is collected and made into coffee!
Ubud and the rice fields also picturesque, stayed in three different locations to get to see the island.
Find some Warungs to eat in, usually very small, sometimes veranda on back of owners house, but food fantastic (trip advisor recommendations) and very cheap, could get six main courses and six soft drinks for £20!

Went there for my honeymoon in 1980. About a million big hotels have appeared since.

Honeymooned there back in the late '90s, had a great time

Kuta Beach is the Aussie Magalluf as I recall.

Stayed at the Oberoi at Legian Beach, very nice. Seminyak v nice also

Ubud and the monkey forest are worth a trip and the active volcano is not something you get to see everyday.

As per Durbar towards Denpasar / Nusa Dur its all built up big chain hotels.

If you can, try and get to the Gili Islands, absolutely fantastic http://www.bali-indonesia.com/gili-islands/

Otherwise, beaches, surfing, satay's and Bintang beer <cool>

Went there last year with family & friends when Mt Agung was about to erupt, unfortunately it didn't erupt until after we returned (was looking forward to telling my boss I was stranded in Bali). Stayed in Seminyak which is a well developed resort with good beach nearby. Lots of good restaurants and easily accessible from Dempasar.

I hope you have a great time.

I didn't go to Kuta for the 'Aussie Magaluf' reasons above.
Ubud is nice, go on a cycle tour to see rice terraces, beautiful views etc.. and the monkey forest is great.
Don't buy the Luwak coffee, it's a type of cat-like animal not a monkey and they trap them to keep in tiny cages for the tourist coffee dollar.
The Gili isles are stunning, proper crystal clear waters, perfect for snorkelling, you'll see literally hundreds of tropical fish, we saw a huge turtle too which was wicked.
