    As far as I remember negotiating away Bale's sell on clause was one disaster that was not on Lowe's watch! I was gutted when I heard we did it but then again if we had gone bust would the sell on clause still have been valid?

    A fair point, but the disaster began [yes, I know this is such old ground] the season Lowe proclaimed to the football world that Saints had one of the strongest squads in the Premier League. We started going backwards from that point. Even the acquisition of Kevin Phillips couldn't stop the inevitable rot, because Saints expected him to be a player, when really he was a master finisher and always has been. We clearly needed strengthening in several areas [this isn't hindsight, I thought so at the time, which is why I remember the statement so well], and it seemed that Lowe & Co were the only ones who didn't seem to realise this.
