We have this conversation every time. It doesn't work like that for lowly clubs like us. There have only been 20 inbound transfers that involve premiership clubs so far. We have been involved in 2 - Zarate In, Mutch out (Inbound for Palace). Quite a few loan deals going from the Prem down into the football league, but we don't want these. So who would we get? Would anyone want to sign - either on loan or permanent - for a relegation threatened club at the beginning of the window? Anyone worth their salt would wait to see if there was any other interest from "better" clubs. Any good player from the lower leagues who we might want will not have gone unnoticed on the radar of other clubs - so they have a choice and can take their time. The only reason someone would sign early in the window for us is if they were desperate to come to the Rs (he he), there was probably going to be no interest from elsewhere, they were desperate to get away (ie Zarate) or they are offered silly money. Like quite a few clubs, we have to wait until the last few days - having put irons in fires - to see what happens. As Harry said we can't let players go if we have nobody coming in. Same goes for a lot of clubs. That is why deadline day is often frenetic as the domino effect comes into force. A player moves to club A which means they can offload a player to club B, which means they can offload to C etc, etc. So don't say "We should have got players in by now" because it was never going to happen.
Which is another reason this whole transfer window business is a farce, the whole thing could be done and dusted in 2 weeks, it just means that Sky can send their reporters to various training grounds on the first Monday in February to create tension and excitement for their handful of viewers......
