...... but I'm afraid this doesn't hold water either! I was still at home when we played Palace. I am quite happy to become the focus of fan irrationality though! There's a lot of it around, most of it directed at CH.
This thread could usefully be re-titled and made sticky: "xxxxxx fans not happy with xxxxxxx" Since you can put the name of most any club in the first blank and the name of their manager in the second, it would make it clear that the thread is actually more about fans than this or that manager.
Seems to be only a few managers who's job is perhaps "secure". I think if Wenger doesn't win anything this season he'll be gone. I know they are in a fantastic position atm but if they bottle it and are quiet in January he will face a **** storm. I also think Rodgers could be in trouble if Liverpool fade off as not enough progress will have been made. Especially if Everton keep going as they are spending a fraction of what Liverpool have spent. Even the 'special one' seems to have harmed his reputation amongst Chelsea fans more than enhanced it
The only problem with this theory is it's usually the older generations doing the moaning. My Grandad has been at it for months now. I try to keep a level head, even after results like man c and pool.
Wenger won't be gone -- unless he maybe decides himself to move upstairs like SAF. Why would he go when his patient strategy of building a competitive side round his crop of young homegrown players is just beginning to bear fruit? The Wenger-outers were/are just the usual noisy minority. Anyway, the most important factor is Arsenal's stability as a club -- financially very stable, a united board under strong home-based leadership. The only threat, largely neutralised by Kroenke's ownership, is the snake in the grass, Usmanov, not the fans. [Edit] If Martinez does well at Everton over the next few years, I could see him taking over at Arsenal in due course, i.e. when AW decides to retire.
I think it certainly is a spectrum of views rather than a simple either/or split. The tonkings hurt us all, but at least each time a good win followed.
obviously not. I agree that it's the modern day constant immediate gratification that has made many football fans expect too much too quickly, unfortunately it is affecting young and old alike. I'm only 20 but I like to think I have quite a level head about these things.
I think there's only one set of fans happy at the moment and if you'd said it would be Arsenal in August we'd all laughed Sent from my Sony Xperia Z1
The point was that there was only one argument that could be put forward to your statement - and that argument was very weak - not an argument with what you actually said Ergo the opening on the sentence - the ONLY argument I can find........
Have I missed something? There is one great (recent) example of a manager who was in charge when his team was relegated from the PL and who brought them back up immediately and in style -- Chris Hughton and Newcastle. Their slide towards the Championship started well before CH was put in charge (remember the widely touted "saviour" -- Shearer), so you couldn't really say that CH "got them relegated". But he certainly got them promoted the following season, playing attractive high-scoring football based on sound defence (if I remember rightly their positive goal difference was huge that season). I presume the conclusion to draw is that, were we to be relegated this season and CH sacked in consequence, he should immediately be re-appointed to get us back up straight away .........
Robbie - I take your point about CH and what he did at Newcastle, but I have long since followed the path that if a person succeeds once that they will do it again, elsewhere.
It will be interesting to see if 'Arry manages to get QPR back up this season. Hot favourites in August, but by no means a foregone conclusion.
I am fairly sure he will, but some would say (as with the Newcastle scenario), that the team was so strong to begin with, that anything other than promotion was unthinkable.
Indeed, and I guess that Tony Fernandes is among them! If they don't get back up you'd almost have to feel sorry for the guy!
But thats only one side of the coin. Do you think the Palace fans wish Ollie was still at the helm? How about Southampton fans so angered at Nigel Adkins sacking. And even dare I say it Newcastle fans after they went on to finish 5th, Last season was flat but again would CH have them challenging europe this season again? Bah!
In all probability Yes! That squad is stronger than the one that he had in 11th when replaced by Pardew.
Or 11th may have been the ceiling at which his limitations precluded real improvement! i.e. 11th finish that season and the next and the next, Good right now if you're a bottom half club but not c.f. 5th and again this season potentially a more lofty finish. But thats all as hypothetical as sacking him meaning a Chaltonesque slide to obscurity! I'd also add that if I thought he would have us finish 11th for the next 2 seasons(not sure I do!) I'd be relatively happy, but it would be nice to see a few less tonkings and a bit more entertainment in our play. Bah!
