Bob's comment about stress fractures is worthy of attention. Monk's triple sessions represent a rapid increase in work load. I made a point a month back about the unusual spate of preseason injuries that we have seen and many brushed it off .... well this is not a good injury to receive at any point your career in this particular area. In rushing to blindly support all that Monk has done and doing ... let's not be so blind to the repercussions. You don't have to be against Monk to have perspective and you shouldn't lose it because you support him. As the saying goes .... best interest of the club .... Monk is not the club. Not nearly as much as Leon is ... if we have to quantify it in human terms, which I don't.
Against Man U & Burnley we appeared a little clumsy with possession. It was particularly evident in second half against Burnley and we desperately needed a change to midfield. Monk obviously didn't think we had any options on bench? We sat back and invited pressure and we were lucky to get all 3 points. I think we could have used Canas on Saturday. Even if Leon were not out we need an alternative who can regain possession and keep hold of it. Very late in transfer window we still have lots of uncertainty regarding midfield. Is the Carroll deal instead of Stambouli, when are Leon and Fulton going to be fit? Are things so bad between Monk and Canas that he wont put him on the bench. Are Fulton or Carroll any good? Anyway 6 points from 6 everything must be fine?
Britton out long term , Canas in the penalty box ,no one coming through the window really and us looking very weak in that spot the last few games . Not a great plan really .
Its not the injury , its the planning of the postion valley ... but nice try. That postion is the center piece of the all important "Swansea Way " .
Totally agree. Time for GM to be the bigger man and try to rehabilitate back in to the squad. We need the players at the moment.
Not dishing it to Monk (honest!) as injuries happen, but is he going to forgive and forget? Even the fans seemed have turned on Canas for some reason who on the face of it hasn't done anything wrong. I suspect Carroll will step up.
TBF Monk has made great play of the intensity and multiple training sessions - this is an injury caused by overtraining / performing. Can't have it both ways. His physic's, doctors and sport scientists all need to improve the support they giving. I also don't think we've improved stamina, speed or skill. Saturday showed that up little skill, (apart from Dyer & Montero) lacking speed and apart from Rangel, Amat & Ash the outfield players looked knackered from 50 minutes.
Lets not forget the massive injury list we had last year. It just seems to be a thing with us. Maybe it is not GM or ML we should have been looking at in terms of injuries. But the people behind the scenes.
Absolutely. But the buck stops with manager / coach. I like Laudrup but he didn't handle injuries well, too many seemed to come from training and Ash was played when he was obviously not fit to continue.
Wasn't responding to your its roof. I agree though, we need a quality DM in ASAP, more now than ever given Leon's long lay off. That said if Monk and Canas can sort out whatever the issues are then he needs to be brought back in immediately if we ain't signing Stambouli or someone else.
Man Utd and Arsenal seem to have the same problems too. You never saw so many players injured 15 years ago. Makes you wonder sometimes if the progress in sport science and recovery etc are as good as the experts say. Are the training pitches artificial? I know that the rugby players, especially forwards had concerns with regards to the Arms Park pitch as they felt their knees etc jar when running, scrummaging etc.
"this is an injury caused by overtraining / performing" You don't know this. Maybe, but maybe not. You can't blame Monk for everything you know.
Google stress fracture - Stress fractures are much more likely to develop in people who have just started a new exercise or abruptly stepped up the intensity of their workout. When the muscles aren't conditioned, they tire easily and can't support and cushion the bones as well. Increased pressure is exerted directly on the bones, which can lead to a fracture. Boots Stress fractures often are the result of increasing the amount or intensity of an activity too rapidly. Orthoinfo stress fractures – a tiny crack that develops in a bone as a result of repeated stresses (for example, overuse during high-impact activities like distance running). Resting the affected body part will heal most stress fractures. NHS A stress fracture is a small crack in a bone caused by overuse and high impact. A stress fracture results from repetitive use injuries that exceed the ability of the bone to repair itself. Orthosurgery followed by: 'Treatment Stress fractures heal with time and rest. Athletes are advised to rest from any activity that caused the stress fracture for the 6-14 weeks that the fractures take to heal (ask your doctor how long your particular fracture will probably take to heal), or until pain-free for 2-3 weeks. If activity is resumed too quickly, a larger stress fracture may develop, the original stress fracture may never heal, and athletes are at risk for re-injury. Activities of daily living and limited walking are permitted. PREVENTION High-impact exercises should be increased gradually (not more than 10% per week).' We have done ok without leon so even though it's bad news for him we will cope. he wont get many games this season anyway. a bench warmer more than a regular these days...
I have also heard something that implies Leon has a valid reason to have some time off. Nothing to do with Monk though, lol.
Yes - if what I heard is correct, then Leon does certainly have a valid reason for time away. Perhaps the "injury" is convenient.........
