You might be on to something there with gearing - I seem to remember they used to be allowed different sets of ratios for different circuits. I think now they have to chose at start of season and that's it. I wonder if Red Bull have gone for longer gearing to give them more top end at the expense of traction out of slow corners?
It could also be the energy deployment system? I do think we've seen red bull into 8th gear more than ferrari, whatever it is its making it a tight championship anyway
I genuinely think it’s a drag thing as opposed to PU. Ferrari have gone for an aggressive design that maximises downforce and to be fair it’s pretty awesome. It’s just that Red Bull can achieve similar l, if not exactly the same DF, with less expense of drag. They are miles clear of the rest at the moment which has really surprised me- I thought we’d see some rapid development and convergence but it just hasn’t gone that way at all.
It could well be the case. The customers are showing ferrari power is better than merc power consistently but the alpha tauri are not really showing anything like the same consistently. It might well be as you say about drag v df.
Serious question guys- are any of you a little underwhelmed by these new regs? I’m not sure I like it as much as I hoped I would. I dunno what it is, whether it’s these big heavy tyres or what, but it’s a strange era so far.
I wasn't a fan of increasing the weight of the cars but for safety it's OK but why make them wider? I think this year and maybe even next won't be when we really see what the effects of the new regs are as they had unlimited budgets to design and test these cars. Now all teams have seen what everyone else has done next year will bring convergence and the year after I am hoping they will be much more equal as the budget caps will be really limiting things and legacy advantages will be gone. I do like that we have different cars and different strengths and weaknesses of performance of each car.
I`d not really given it much thought if I liked these new regs or not.But now that you`ve mentioned it I must agree with you that I`m not too keen on them at all.I do like to see Ferrari back in the mix of things, but I`m really missing Lewis being at the front and being able to fight for wins with the other two that are leading the way at the moment. Also,if the Merc.was a real race winner,I`m sure that George could show his full potential and possibly have his first win under his belt by now.Can you just imagine him having a good dice with Verstappen? Slill, we live in hope.
There's a fair bit to like and a fair bit to dislike. Good being that cars can run closer now without destroying their tyres almost instantly, which does give some hope for the future and some closer battles. Downside, the cars are fat heavy beasts, when I think most of us prefer something a bit more compact and nimble. The sheer size of them contributes to hindering passing at some tracks, which is contrary to the point. Also, despite the improved ability to run closer, we're still ridiculously dependent on DRS, so there is a long way to go yet. But we might be on the right track at least.
Ideal? What is the definition of that word? F1 is changing and the influence of the US market is unlikely to bring the result of 'Ideal'. Miami was a good example of the outcome of that influence. Technology vs Driver vs the Two of them. I think if Perez is allowed to battle fairly for the championship then the driver mix we have currently is really one of the best ever. I think the new regs will take time for teams to master the challenges still but then there will be new big changes in the coming years with new technology for the power, plus we have the new entrants intended. The process of evolution is itself exciting. There will be much to observe, admire, criticise, beyond the race outcome itself. Over the coming years I hope it doesn't change the core and I hope it maintains it's European imprint.
Agree the only thing that's making the championship is drs. Without it half the tracks would be impasse I agree that cars are too big and heavy.

Quali to start at 3:15 BST due to 15 min delay to FP3 and the rule of needing 2 hours between FP3 and quali. A couple of red flag delays and the wuali session will be in sunset darkness! WHY ARE WE HAVING THE SESSION SO LATE LOCAL TIME?? FP3 is in perfect weather and it’s at a perfectly acceptable TV time- why isn’t quali in this slot?? Seriously, we do some weird stuff.
Skys “Audio Up” has to be one of the most underwhelming F1 broadcast things I’ve ever seen. Would have been good in the V10 era though
I have gone with Sergio for this weekend. I think his attitude has become 'I can win' in the last few weeks. Self belief is very important.
This is what happens when you give rich kids powerful toys ****ing useless. He’s had enough time in the sport IMO.
