Our defence leaked goals last year so we needed to make a new signing in that position if we were going to improve. That means signing a player we hope will be a regular first choice. Barnett and Ward are more likely to be happy as 4th and 5th choice than Whitbread would have been. Although it seems odd that we got rid of our 3rd best CB and kept our 4th and 5th choices there probably is a logic to it (you can tell I've been playing Football Manager!)
