Most scared at a football match was probably Chelsea at the Valley in the seventies. They took over the Covered end and lit a bonfire. They smashed up the turnstiles and Club shop and smashed up a few Charlton fans. Luckily I got out unscathed. I won't lie, I was ****ting myself. Chelsea were really nasty in those days. Sheffield Wednesday at the Valley was pretty nasty. It was going off all game.
Would agree Dick - the worst fans for trouble I have seen at Charlton are Sheff Wed (Selhurst) and Chelsea (Battle of the Bridge)
Kilmarnock Vs St Mirren one New Year's Day game scared the sh1t out of me, hails of bottles and cans flying between the respective fans, how no-one was hurt I've got no idea. St Mirren had an 18-year-old centre-half called Gordon McQueen who made late runs into the box at corner kicks, first time I'd seen that.
If I remember the game at Maidstone, there was a floodlight failure during the match. I also remember Charlton fans starting more the one fire around the ground. The old London Road ground was heaving that night and it still is Maidstone's record crowd, despite the fact loads of people bunked in and there were quite a few 'dodgy' tickets going round. Typically, for some reason, I missed the original tie at The Valley and the infamous Hales/Flanagan fracas. I also went to the 4th round tie at Eastville - where of course we got knocked out - smaller crowd than the Maidstone tie.
Great thread BTW. Love reminiscing the old grounds I've been to that no longer exist. Did a quiz a little why ago with pictures of Housing/Trading Estates which used to be football grounds. .Got a few groans from my mates - but it was fascinating trying to work out what was where. I'll post it up if I can dig it out.
A few others I’ve been to with Charlton which no longer exist - Bristol Rovers Derby County Leicester City Man City Southampton Arsenal Millwall Barnet All great parts of our English football heritage
Found it - four years old though. Not sure how it comes out, but please fell free to give it a try. I obviously have the answers!
Yep - done all those, along with Man City Brighton Huddersfield Middlesbro Reading Cardiff Swansea Hull Bolton (last game at Burnden) Wigan Shrewsbury Rotherham Scunthorpe Doncaster Oxford Wimbledon Coventry Colchester Yeovil Chesterfield Of the current 92 - Just realised how many new grounds there are now,
Some good ones there, I did Coventry the day Steve Gritt went in goal for us Middlesbrough away on Xmas Eve when we took about 100 to Ayresome Park , Hull drew 2-2....conceded a goal from a free kick in injury time , Reading Elm Park we drew 2-2, Brighton at the Goldstone always lively before & after the game. Some good memories there ...
9 Premier 8 Championship 1 League 1 3 League 2 All old grounds with Charlton 2 Premier 7 League 1 2 League 2 All of the above non Charlton
Exeter are leading tonight. Exeter is a great away trip but I'd prefer Lincoln to go up as only done them in a friendly with us. Totally redeveloped ground since I went in about '87
Anyone else been to Grimsby away ? We drew 1-1 up there under Lennie ? Awful smell of fish & the town is a sh1thole.
