Love it Remote. The curiosity of farm animals with people they know is wonderful.

Not as bad as the appalling tossers we voted in, in Cardiff. Did Prickford surreptitiously drug us all?

Not me, I wouldn't vote for the git if I was the last voter on earth. I would abstain and commit suicide (painlessly of course) if forced to do so.

Why can't Prickford, Putin, the dick from North Korea, Hamas leaders and Boris be cast adrift on the same leaky dinghy in an Atlantic Force 8 gale?

The world would be a better and safer place.

P.S. Add Roy Keane to that list.

3G networks being disconnected from January '24 so our perfectly good 8 year old Samsung mobiles which aren't compatible with 4/5G are destined for the bin (recycled of course <whistle>). We've had them since 2016 and on special SIM only deal which only costs 6 quid a month each with my BT Halo broadband package.

Reason for the post is I phoned BT about it and was answered by someone with a strong north east accent. Had a conversation as to the options available and mentioned about him being a Geordie - big mistake. <doh> After his friendly rant, it turns out he was a devout Mackem and the conversation turned to our win against them up there last month which he was at. To be fair he said they should have won the game but the way we played it out he had nothing but praise for City. He also said he reckoned if they finished above us they'd make the top 6 - some compliment.

Anyway, after 10 minutes of football chat, got a great deal for 3 brand new phones and sims - arriving today. Don't need squiggly gigabytes of download capacity - we just want to make and recieve phone calls. A bit "old fashioned" I know, but 3 brand new Samsung 4/5G phones, unlimited calls and texts and a couple of gig of data for less than 30 quid a month will do us just fine

I thought the same, but it turned out to be a build up of dust in the charging socket. Blew it out after dislodging it with a cocktail stick and everything worked normally

Warning - long read with some ramblings, or you could scroll to the end for the headline. :emoticon-0105-wink:

Ok, in our attempts (and failure) to keep animals where we want them, we often use electric fencing. Literally miles of the stuff.
Narrow braided nylon type 'string' with fine metal strands interwoven.
Power comes from a 12v leisure battery connected to a gubbins called an energiser, which turns 12v into 7000+volt pulses (my fence tester tops out at 7kV).
Obviously, from time to time, the batteries need re-charging.
Buying a charger is a nightmare. Deep cycle leisure batteries are quite different from car batteries and need a different charging technique for best performance and longevity (surprising the things you learn).
3 stage, computer controlled, battery maintenance and repair.
We've had quite a sophisticated one for some time. Multi function, boost and car start if you press the right buttons.
Anyway, noticed the other day no batteries were charging. Turns out the lug to the lead for the positive terminal was fried (or rather, frying, the plastic knob was melting).

    Repair or new?
We need something quick as we have quite a few flat batteries and sheep in fields without stock netting.

This is the crux of the story. After talking to a local 'hardware outlet' that I've bought all sorts of equipment from over the years, they pointed me at Sealey for who they are an outlet. Basically, they said 'we're an outlet, they are the experts if you need advice'.
Our existing charges is Sealey anyway.

Spoke to technical support at sealey this morning. A breath of fresh air. Knowledgeable, informative, helpful even.
I explained my problem and we discussed my options.

The wife of the guy I spoke had horses, so he understood the purpose.
We discussed repairs, he told me the parts I'd need and how to undertake the repair. He then stated the 24v and 12v lugs on my charger were the same, with different fuses. While he didn't say I could swap the lugs and fuses for a free fix (we don't use the 24v output), he led me to that conclusion.

As a family, we'd discussed getting a 2nd charger as a spare. I went through the requirements with the guy on the phone and came to a compromise solution.
Didn't want to spend a lot but wanted something that wouldn't take forever to charge. A like for like replacement for ours is about £300, but it can supply 30 amps.
The cheapest with the right functionality was £50 but only an 8 amp model, so I went for the 15 amp model at £70. The 8 amp model would take about 15 hours to charge a 110Ah battery, the 15 amp model about 8.

So, £70, and a new charger arrives tomorrow, which gives me a bit of time for a free fix on our more sophisticated charger.
Daughter can then keep the other charger at her place and use her electricity to charge batteries. (To be fair, you can charge a battery for next to nothing).

The crux of the story is, there are some really good suppliers out there with staff who know their stuff and don't try to sell you something you don't need and help you fix your kit as cheaply as possible.

    Im feeling quite enthused.

When in college I did a year's industrial placement at AB Electronics in Abercarn. We did the motor controllers for PowaKaddy.

It was 40 years ago so can't help you with your charger though.<laugh>

In 1939 I bought my wife a brand new electric iron. She's still using it today and it's never needed repair. *

Brilliant. You really are an Urban Spaceman Clingo!!!

You have to think about what was going through the minds and/or veins of the guys who wrote that stuff.

I'm sure Aber can advise. <whistle>

When I read your posts remote I am quite envious sometimes. I would love a life living on a small holding/farm and wish I had done this years ago.
My extended family had a lot of farmers and I loved going to spend the summer holidays with my uncles and grandparents in County Tyrone.
I spent the whole ten weeks driving a tractor, collecting the hay, potatoes and various other vegetables. We collected dozens of eggs daily from the free range chickens and my grandad had an acre of strawberries which was his main income. When the strawberry season finished he dug up the ground and collected worms which were sold by the tin to the fishermen in Lough Neagh where they caught an abundance of eels which were one of the main food sources. Couldn’t stand the taste of them or any fish or meat so I became a vegetarian, a word no one had ever heard of in my family!
I’m getting on a bit now and the old bones have welcomed sciatica and arthritis into my system but I really enjoy reading about your life on the farm.

It seems like a whole different world away from all the sh1t we have to deal with.

Looking forward to driving home soon trying to avoid craters in the road, cyclists, getting into bus lanes, kids on electric scooters or doing wheelies on their bike, jay walkers crossing the road with headphones on and all at 20mph:emoticon-0121-angry

I consider myself very fortunate to have our smallholding Irish. All an accident, not planned, but a happy accident.
Was also fortunate to get out of the rat race young enough to enjoy it. Lots of back problems along with plenty aches and pains, mainly rugby related, but its surprising how my fitness has improved in the last few years, without trying.

I said when I retired, I just swapped one type of $h!t for another.
30 years in an office allowed me to make the swap, but wouldn't go back.

I spent 3 hours driving up and down in the tractor this afternoon.
No stress, no hassle, out in the fresh air.

I've repeatedly said, I play at it. I wouldn't want to have to do it for a living and total respect to those who do.
And every day is a school day.
