It is sad and I have to confess to being a lazy git and it's only now that I'm starting to learn Welsh. I'm fully aware for the need for practicality but it would be sad if so much heritage just drifts away. Fortunately and as you say, thank goodness for people working hard across Britain to hang onto their individual cultures.
Mrs Remote speaks Welsh as a second language. I learned to the age of 14. Could hold a basic conversation. Went to the Urdd camp at Llangranog a few times. If you went away from camp to any shops they were told only to speak to you in Welsh. Doing the sciences for O level, Welsh didnt fit into the timetable for me so ended up doing French. After getting married, if driving, we'd speak Welsh, then life got in the way. I've meant to start again but keep faltering. Good on you for starting Clingo. Just need to stir my stumps and get on with it. Its a relatively uncomplicated language with regular verbs. The various mutations trip me up though.
From an English speaking family at home I got to O Level being almost fluent. Lost most when I left for university and work. Still got some but its true...use it or lose it. Its down in the depths of my brain still but is drowning in German and Russian!
Went on a road trip today to look at a truck with our daughter. 80 odd miles, down to Nottingham. Past Notts County's ground, past Trent Bridge. Down Ratcliffe Road then down some rat runs. Turned into a dead end with what looked like a dodgy backstreet dealer. Once passed the facade, it turned out to be quite a large establishment with mainly 2nd hand high end vehicles. Further looking at the units around it showed niche motor bike and car establishments. Fortunately the truck passed muster and we were able to complete the deal and drive it back so no need for a return trip so her Ford Ranger has been replaced by a Mitsubishi L200.
Mam's bithday next monday so planned to come down to Porth on Thursday evening after a day fishing near Rhayader, then back to Cheshire on Friday. All fell to rat-$h!t when I got a phone call from neighbours late last night to say they were at the hospital with her as she'd had a fall when out. They took her to the hospital as after calling 999 they were told it would be 2 hours before an ambulance could get to her. 8 hours later after x-rays and a scan of her head they got her home. Arrived here this morning to find her in a moon boot for a fractured ankle and her head bandaged up covering a head full of stitches. She's slept most of the day Hopefully a night's rest and she'll be up to 3.5 hours in the car to get her up to our house. Not sure she'll be up to going out for her 93rd birthday on monday though.
Remote - be there and do it. I didn't (always too bloody busy ) and regret it to this day 14 years on. Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi always brings it home.
Sorry to hear this Remote. I'm sure you and your family will give her the best of care to speed her recovery.
Thanks for all the good wishes. I think its me thats going to need support though. Or maybe counciling. The compression bandage on her head, which was supposed to be on for 3 or 4 days is already off. She wanted to comb her hair. She keeps taking her moon boot off which needs to be on for 10 days. She takes it off because its easier to walk without it. Then puts it on when she sits down. Then, after telling her to call me before she comes down stairs so I could stand in front of her, I hear the stairs creak and find her on the way down, without the boot. Finally, she's decided she's not coming to stay with us, which was a planned visit, because her boot will make it awkward. Its worse than having little kids.
I obviously don't know you that well remote but I've got a strong idea that while trying to get your mum to follow the doctor's orders, you'll also be proud of her sense of independence and self determination. Terrific attributes at her age. Hope she's on the mend.
Its a double edged sword. Feeling of pride and frustration. She is overly independant Also grateful for the good neighbours she has, and members of the extended family.
In Ca’n Picafort for a couple of weeks, gonna buy the £10 match pass for Saturday, anybody had problems with this before?
My mates use it fairly often, generally ok but a bit of a lag in the coverage compared to TV it seems (I have accidentally given out spoilers for them when watching Sky games ).
Being a fair weather farmer, not a day to be out. Mrs remote doing the chickens while I hide in the tack room with hell dog. Daughter's collies running around outside like its a dry spring day. They're impervious to the fact its bucketing down. Mam feeling a bit sore today as the bruising is coming out. Trying to sort remedial treatment for her head wounds and ankle injury. Her being registered in wales and me trying to sort treatment in England complicates matters. Woman on reception in the surgery was struggling with the concept. Paperwork to fill in and a couple calls to make should get it sorted. Devolution. Great.
Mam spent 10 months with us during covid. Tried to get her surgery in Porth to exchange info with our surgery in Northwich regarding medication she's on. Impossible. In England you tell your surgery what chemist you want to pick your prescription up from and they email it through. You then get a text when its ready to pick up. Tried that with her surgery in Porth. Couldn't do it. Different systems. Ended up with boxes of tablets being taken to our surgery to reverse engineer her prescription. Bonkers.
