I totally agree with your second paragraph and think it's a good way of summing things up.
The bit that baffles me, is the bit about "moving on and progressing". I know that it can't be done overnight, but i'm completely bemused as to why and how "progressing" is selling 2 of our best players and not making SURE that we've got them replaced, as well as other signings we needed. We took care of the King issue by signing Vertonghen a few weeks prior to the end of the window. - what a difference that made! he's been brilliant since signing. With Caulker coing back too, it was like 2 new signings and both have been fantastic for us. - a clear indication that if you've got your players in good time and can work with them, it makes a huge difference.
it was inevitable that Modric was leaving and same for VDV (but came about a bit later on). The rumours over VDV leaving still gave us plenty of time to sort something else out, even if it wasn't official. - you can still bet the club knew he wanted to move back to be with his wife.
RM aren't a club to piss about. they clearly wanted LM and that was obvious for all to see for weeks and weeks. it just amazes me that Dembele was left until 3 days before the end, when the sale of LM was going to happen. And Rafa wasn't replaced at all to be honest. Oh, and we let Kane go out on loan leaving us with 2 strikers.
How is this an organised plan to "progress" and push on from 4/5th place finishes?
IMO, its contradictory to what we're trying to achieve and we completely shot ourselves in the foot. I just don't get it.
I hear this criticism about Levy and transfers over and over again. To me it just shows the complete lack of understanding of the market that football players are in.
It's a very volatile market and one where the seller often does not want to sell. Imagine someone trying to but your house that you did not want to sell. The potential buyer would need to offer you an amount that forced the issue and made you sell. Add to that that you would need to find somewhere else to live so off you go to negotiate with someone who doesn't want to sell but you can offer them more than it's worth because you are being given more than your house is worth. And so on and on. This all becomes very complex add to the mix an agent who want;s his cut then doing any deal is very difficult. Now add to all a deadline! WOW!
Instead of moaning about the failures we should be applauding the success. Look at the squad that has been built and I reckon it's pretty impressive in fact it has to be the most impressive rebuild outside of the two unlimited resource clubs.
We can't just go and pick the players we want from the supermarket it's all a bit more complicated than that.

Yes I know it's hard, that's what I am trying to say. Selling VDV was a big mistake but we don't what happened at the time do we?
