He's right about the subject. I've been to a subdued WHL on a few occasions when I've heard opposition fans sing"You're supposed to be at home." Others have said "Don't your fans make any noise or cheer?" I suggest those offended by his remarks take them on the chin and don't dwell on them after all he's on our side isn't he?

I'm inclined to agree with PNP in that it's a ticketing price issue. There is almost a direct correlation between increase in ticket pricing and atmosphere. I don't know how things work at Spurs but at Chelsea we seem to have long-term Season Ticket Holders dropping out and becoming members thus picking and choosing their games. This is why we tend to consistently get a better atmosphere against Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City/Man Utd and KO round CL nights.

Spurs won't have a problem getting an atmosphere against Arsenal, United, Liverpool or City (games that will generate interest from the offset). Those are games where passions run high and in a sadistic way you can enjoy the nerves and tension that comes with it. Against the likes of Hull it's different, there's more expectation and a sigh of relief when you win rather than actually being able to enjoy the game. Against the likes of Hull it's up to AVB and the players to show the initiative, those are the games that you give back to the fans.

About giving absolute support.
In our national league- the A league we have a team near to where I live called Western Sydney Wanderers, they have a supporter group called the Red & Black bloc (they play in red & black hoops like the old QPR shirt)
this group takes over one whole end of the ground behind the goal and sing and chant for the entire 90 mins regardless of the score
The players have stated that it gives them the lift they need to keep going even when they aren't playing well.
So if you want it can be done- but you have got to want to - that is the issue!
 
I think that the fans of smaller clubs often feel a closer affinity to the club and to the town or city it represents. Perhaps they feel a greater unity as a group together and want to display their identity and passion and for the club/town. You get good atmospheres at a lot of small grounds wherever the home team is in the league.

Hartlepool fans, for example, have never experienced success. I don't expect they have any great hopes of success, but enjoy the camaraderie and sense of belonging. When "success" comes along - whether promotion, a cup run or even an unexpected win, they are more likely to embrace and enjoy it.

Conversely, the fans of the big clubs don't enjoy the experience for what it is; they demand success; they don't always have the same bond with the club or the town or city the club represents. The "prawn sandwich brigade" make up an increasingly bigger proportion of the spectators at many leading clubs. The fans who would once turn up and pay £10 or £15 to stand on the terraces have been frozen out. Of course Utd suffer with this problem at home, but it's no surprise that the leading London clubs do too. Corporate entertainment for many.

There's one huge difference, we pay a hell of a lot more to watch our clubs. Like it or not, money will dictate the atmosphere, if you're spending a good few bob on a ticket, you want your moneys worth, simple as that, regardless of how much you love your club and supporting them through thick and thin, you want something for your money's worth and while atmosphere's have been pretty shoddy at Spurs, attendances haven't. I've seen some people say things like "it doesn't matter how much you pay you should still support" etc, with all respect these are probably the people that don't get down the Lane as much others or have too much money so it's easy to say that when you're not forking out a lot of your wages each season. Lower league tickets cost much less the further you go down and so you can go there feeling easy about spending your money not expecting too much so to speak and so the general atmosphere is more relaxed, you can afford more beers too when you're paying less on a ticket so that'll always help!

I read that you can buy a season ticket at Borussia Dortmund in certain areas for about a £120! I pay that amount for about 3-4 Spurs games so no wonder Dortmund fans are always buzzing about the place.

So would you rather be entertained by a 4-5 loss every week and be relegated or get a boring 1-0 win and be champions?

You know the answer so why do you seem to object to helping AVB making us winners rather than entertainers

Oh yes of course I'd rather lose and be relegated... <doh>.

Teams have pretty much sussed how we play, as evidence from the fact that we've scored just 6 goals from open play in 9 league games. 9 points from our 19 have come from winning penalties and they've been against inferior opposition. Lets not forget that last season, it was Bale's wonder goals that massively helped us out in games, we don't have a Bale to "bail" us out any more and despite the fact that on paper, I believe we have a superb squad, arguably our best in years, there's clearly something not clicking and so far I've yet to see any signs of that changing/ improving. The boring 1-0 wins won't always last and I've never seen a team play like we've done on a consistent basis and become Champions.

I get that the new players need time to adapt and the current players need to learn to gel with the new ones but it doesn't mean the football overall has to look boring and at times, clueless. These are professional footballers earning thousands upon thousands a week, these sort of players come with expectations.

Spurs have had a tradition of playing good football, yes we haven't won an abundance of trophies but that's because other teams have been better than us, just as there are now. Our 3 big games so far this season has seen very, very poor displays with the 1st half vs Chelsea aside. From those 3 games we've picked up 1 point when realistically, we should be aiming for a minimum of 4. The teams we've beat to get to 4th in the table so far are teams we should be beating when considering the strength of playing squads available, though Everton on Sunday will be a huge test for us. Despite our defensive record being superb, there have been times this season where had the opposition had a better finisher, we probably wouldn't be boasting such a good record and Lukaku certainly comes under the better finisher bracket.

I'm not asking/ expecting us to play like Bayern or Barca but with the players we have, I expect us to be able to play to a good standard with an eye-catching brand of football.

I think I could have written your first paragraph there SOS. I totally agree with everything you've written there. I've been pointing out for a while that we are not scoring enough in the PL but others have been satisfied but that's up to them. For me what's not clicking and NEVER has for us is a one striker role, so ffs get another to go with Bobby in January, ditch Defoe and Ade because they are yesterday's men and then we'll go. No doubt there'll be dissenters about Defoe leaving but I think it's the solution.

I think it's a mixture of things, we're not getting enough crosses or passes into Soldado for him to be able to do the business and yet AVB hasn't really addressed this issue despite it being so evident. Soldado had one chance Sunday and he was being tussled with by their CB resulting in him getting a tame effort low on goal which Harper saved fairly comfortably. The striker himself isn't a problem, even though for £26m I would've expected something extra (not sure what exactly... Just that extra spark and ability to something magical so to speak). As for Ade and Defoe, Ade can definitely go for all I care, he's never shown any passion or determination since signing permanently, he's arguably the most talented striker we have but I don't think we'll ever see him show it, Defoe is someone who I think is good enough for a squad role but if we do go out and sign another top striker to either play with or compete with Soldado then I can understand letting JD go.
 
Not bad a time to read this thread, 2 days after the event that is, not so annoyed shall I put it!

Points of note during my read...

Someone said we have the 1882 Group in a small part of the ground for cups but are split up on PL games, to my mind, that group used to be called the Park Lane End! Now the singers are just pockets of lads being watched by stiffs who won't join in, some with disapproving looks at the noise spoiling their experience it would seem!, I sometimes feel like getting in someones face and ask why they are there, only to cheer when we score it would seem. As is pointed out a few times lower leagues have better atmospheres, I think smaller capacities, cheaper prices, and a more localised fanbase play a part in that.

Aswell as an increase in the 'corporate fan' the other thing is age, the average age of a crowd member has gone up imo, I'm only generalising in saying this, but older men with family are less likely to sing 'all' game than a group of lads in there 20's, and its this agegroup that again generally, have either no job, or have a job, a young family and no spare money.

Imo, more vocal fans these days are sadly for WHL , to be found in pubs where you'll find great atmosphere and banter from both sets of fans in there.

AVB is a twat...in more ways than one. Totally out of touch with club football in this country today and historically. If he could apply his thoughts on the performance of the crowd to his team we may do better.

You're bang on there. I can't remember which home game it was but I gave my ticket to my younger cousin as I didn't think I was going to be back from holiday in time (I actually was in the end but hey-ho) and so I went to the Bill Nich for it.

All I'll say is if I could've got all those fans in the Park Lane where I sit, the atmosphere would be brilliant. Non-stop singing, beer showers, jumping up and down like raving lunatics, just a perfect afternoon especially as we won.

Park Lane and most of WHL is now full of plastics in my opinion. The 1882 is a great idea but I've read that while Spurs are happy with the group, they won't allocate an actual area for people wanting to be a part of it hence why it's only cup games or u21 matches where everyone is able to get a ticket in a similar area as the demand is less, which is a huge shame and quite disappointing from Spurs that they're not helping out. If AVB wants an improved atmosphere it should be his employers he should be moaning at, we have stewards that won't let us stand, the drum was taken away a few years back, the Yid chant is obviously trying to be taken away from us and so couple that with plastic fans... No wonder WHL has become a library of late.

The matchday experience has changed considerably, can't do this, can't do that, and WHL can't even serve you a "cold" bottle of beer at halftime to wash to down a disappointing first 45 minutes.

Food for thought...will a new ground twice as big be twice as quiet?
