We still have winger David Wheeler on loan from QPR, Ides. We do require another left winger to replace Andre Green, and another striker to support Oli Hawkins and Brett Pitman though.

Bristol Rovers manager Graham Coughlan has played down suggestions that Liam Sercombe could well join Portsmouth. Strong rumours we are after him.

The Bristol Rovers midfielder was missing in Saturday's poor defeat to Wycombe Wanderers, sparking rumours amongst fans that he could well be on the move.
Yet Gas boss Coughlan says the player was out with an eye issue.

Very experienced and talented player, but we do need another striker, not another midfielder.

Winger David Wheeler has been recalled by QPR from his Pompey loan. He wasn't getting much playing time with us, so that's fair enough, but we will miss him, so I hope we have another winger lined up to replace him.

UPDATE: He has now joined MK Dons on loan for the rest of the season

Another rumour - don't know how true it is. 5' 7" in height, but very pacy. I thought Kenny was looking for another tall striker like Oli Hawkins !

Pompey have signed 6' 3" striker Omar Bogle on loan from Cardiff for the remainder of the season.

The 25-year-old – who spent the first half of the campaign at Birmingham – will wear the number 22 shirt during his time at Fratton Park.

Blues boss Kenny Jackett said: “We’re very pleased to have Omar and he’s someone that we’ve followed from his early days at Grimsby.

“He’s got pace, he’s got power and a strong left-foot to score goals, so I’m looking forward to working with him.

“It strengthens an area of the pitch where we were lacking in options and he makes a good addition to our front line.”

Bogle began his career in the non-league game with Hinckley and Solihull before signing for Grimsby and netting 38 goals in 78 games.

The former England ‘C’ international then had a short stint with Wigan before Cardiff brought him to Wales in the summer of 2017.

Bogle is the third arrival at Pompey during the January transfer window, following the permanent captures of Andy Cannon and Bryn Morris.

    Lloyd Isgrove (right)

Portsmouth have signed winger Lloyd Isgrove on loan from League One promotion rivals Barnsley.

The 5' 10", 26-year-old, who won a cap for Wales in 2016, will stay until the end of the season at second-placed Pompey.

Having begun his career at Southampton, he has also had loans at Peterborough and Sheffield Wednesday. His Barnsley contract runs out at the end of this season.

"He has got very good technique, can trouble defenders and is comfortable being used on either wing," Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett said.

According to reliable journalist Pete O’Rourke, League One title contenders Sunderland and Portsmouth are both keen on signing attacker Wes McDonald, who has recently been released from League Two side Yeovil Town.

Portsmouth and Sunderland are interested in signing free agent 21 year old Wes McDonald after the tricky winger rejected a new contract offer from Yeovil at the start of the month.

McDonald only moved to Huish Park in the summer transfer window prior to the start of the season. The former Birmingham man joined on a short-term deal after a successful trial throughout pre-season. However, a contract extension was not met after the winger picked up a hamstring injury. The club stated that he was set to be out for “much of the second half of the campaign” with the injury.

McDonald’s youth career started in the academy at Premier League side Crystal Palace, where he stayed until 2009. The attacker then moved onto the Fulham academy, playing for the London-based club for four years before joining Birmingham City in 2013.

He spent five years in total at St Andrew’s, going out on loan twice. After brief loan spells with non-league sides Nuneaton and Solihull Moors, McDonald left Birmingham to join Yeovil. He went on to play 12 times for The Glovers before his release earlier this month.

Portsmouth have signed striker James Vaughan on loan from Championship club Wigan until the end of the season. The former Everton, Sunderland and Bury man had been linked with a January transfer window move to Bolton, Oxford and Fleetwood.

The 30-year-old, 5'11" forward has scored three goals in 20 games for Wigan this season.

League One promotion hopefuls Pompey become Vaughan's 11th club since he made his first-team debut in the Premier League with Everton in 2005.

"James is an experienced centre-forward and has been excellent for clubs for a number of years," said Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett.

Former Pompey winger Kyle Bennett has joined Swindon Town from Bristol Rovers on loan until the season's end. He will link up there with ex-Pompey midfielder Danny Rose.

Our former striker Peter Crouch has signed for an undisclosed fee for Premier League Burnley, from Stoke City.

Former PFC skipper Michael Doyle has left Coventry City for second division Notts County.

Viv Solomon-Otabor Arrives On Loan !!

please log in to view this image

Pompey have signed winger Viv Solomon-Otabor on loan from Birmingham for the remainder of the season.

The 23-year-old becomes the sixth addition to the Blues squad during the January transfer window following the arrivals of Andy Cannon, Bryn Morris, Omar Bogle, Lloyd Isgrove and James Vaughan.

Blues boss Kenny Jackett said: “He’s an exciting young player who can be used on either side and impressed at this level with Blackpool last season. He is 5' 9" tall.

“But he’s been a bit frustrated at Birmingham and that’s because of the standard of wingers they have at the club.

“We’re delighted to add a talented and pacy player to our group and he’ll be determined to prove that he can be part of Pompey’s future.”

Solomon-Otabor turned professional with Birmingham in the summer of 2014 and has had spells on loan with Bolton and Blackpool.

He made 47 appearances for the latter last season, with one of his five goals coming in a 3-2 home defeat to Pompey.

So the squad is up to its strength in numbers. As for the quality that is a big question mark, but I suspect Gillingham would have slapped a big fee on the head of Eames, that some fans here would have like, so that would have been a non-starter. I would be prepared to play these guys in the Cup unless cup-tied. If not, then the younger players so that the full strength team is fully focused on being fit and fresh for the League matches.

Gillingham slapped a £2 million valuation on Tom Eaves - I don't believe he is worth that kind of money - so hence he is still a Gillingham player

Portsmouth Academy defender earns England youth call-up

please log in to view this image

Haji Mnoga has earned himself a call-up to the England under-17 squad. The Pompey Academy defender started on the bench in the Young Lions’ 3-2 friendly victory over France yesterday.

He’ll also be involved in England’s clash against Hungary on Sunday. Mnoga’s international breakthrough comes after making his Blues first-team debut this season. The former Trafalgar School pupil has featured three times for Kenny Jackett’s side during their run to the Checkatrade Trophy semi-finals. The 16-year-old made his senior bow in the 1-0 win at Crawley in October before playing against Tottenham under-21s and Peterborough.

Pompey travel to Bury on February 26 for the right to face either Sunderland or Bristol Rovers in the final at Wembley. Mnoga has also made 18 appearances and scored once for Mark Kelly’s Academy side this season.

    Pompey Mourn Mick Kennedy <peacedove>

please log in to view this image

Pompey are mourning the death of Mick Kennedy, who has passed away at the age of 57.

A tough-tackling midfielder, he was a popular member of the side that secured promotion to the top-flight in 1987.

By the time Mick arrived at Fratton Park at the age of 23, he had already racked up more than 200 league appearances for Halifax, Huddersfield and Middlesbrough.

One of his earliest games for the former was in a 2-0 home victory over the Blues in February 1979.

When Alan Ball was appointed manager in the summer of 1984, he paid £100,000 to make Kennedy one of his first signings.

He added much-needed aggression to the centre of the pitch and following two near-misses, finally helped Pompey return to Division One.

The big question for fans was whether they could stay there, but the job was made harder when, against both his and Ball’s wishes, Mick was sold to Bradford for £250,000 midway through the campaign.

Kennedy’s final game for the Blues was certainly a memorable one, though, with Southampton beaten 2-0 at The Dell.

But Pompey would win just two more league games that season and many supporters still point to the sale of Mick – who won two Republic of Ireland caps during his time at the club – as the reason for their relegation.

He would later team up with Ball again at Stoke, also featuring for Leicester, Luton, Chesterfield and Wigan before hanging up his boots.

Kennedy was honoured for his contribution to Pompey last year when he was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame.

The thoughts of everyone at Portsmouth Football Club are with Mick’s family and friends at this sad time.

Mark Kelly has praised Haji Mnoga after the Pompey defender made his debut for England under-17s.

The right-back featured in a goalless draw against Hungary at the weekend, having earlier been named on the bench for a 3-2 victory over France.

It is the latest step in a successful season for the 16-year-old, who has made three first team appearances for the Blues in the Checkatrade Trophy this term.

And Kelly believes international recognition is another sign of the good work being undertaken in Pompey’s youth set-up.

The academy manager said: “Haji went to St George’s Park and flew out to Spain, with the games being held at the Pinatar Arena in Murcia.

“It’s a great facility that’s used by a lot of clubs and the sun was out, which is nice at this time of year.

“Hungary didn’t want to come out and play too much, so they were quite negative, but Haji was able to grow into the game.

“He got forward well from right-back and sent some decent balls in, while his defending was strong. It was a first step and I thought he acquitted himself well.

“That recognition is nice to get and reflects on the work we’re doing at Pompey. Eyes are back on us again and I’ve been getting phone calls from guys from national teams.

“Harvey Rew has been away with Wales, Eoin Teggart and Leon Maloney have been getting interest from the Ireland sides, Croatia will be looking at Petar Durin and Joe Hancott has always been on England’s radar.”

Kelly has now challenged Mnoga to keep improving and believes he has all the attributes to achieve success.

He said: “Haji has still got a lot of developing to do and plenty to learn. He’s stepped into the first team for the Checkatrade Trophy matches and has got the physicality to be able to do that.

“He’s a big, strong lad and is trying to build a well-rounded game. It’s about being consistent and trying to become more tactically aware.

“Some of our first year scholars aren’t as developed physically, but are maybe more technical. It’s all a fine balancing act.

“But Haji certainly didn’t look out of place when playing for England. I remember when I was younger and went away with Ireland and it’s hard when you don’t know anyone.

“He’s a Portsmouth boy through and through, so probably hasn’t been off the island too much in the past.

“They’ve all grown up together here, but international football takes you out of that comfort zone and it’s something else he has to manage.”

Former Portsmouth loanee turns down move to Plymouth .

Joe Mason has rejected a move to Plymouth. The former Pompey loanee had the opportunity to return to his hometown club – but turned it down.

Mason spend the first half of this season on loan at Fratton Park from Wolves. However, the forward made just four appearances for Kenny Jackett’s side – with only one coming in the League One promotion push. Mason’s Blues deal expired on January 2 and he returned to Molineux. The 27-year-old left the Premier League outfit by mutual consent on transfer deadline day last month. Mason has been weighing up his options since, with Plymouth tabling him a deal. However, Derek Adams confirmed he turned down a switch to Home Park.

The Pilgrims boss told BBC Radio Devon: ‘He has offers from other clubs in our division and the division below. ‘We put an offer to him, but it's not going to happen for us. ‘I spoke to the agent and he has better offers in other places.’
