That may well be the perfect analogy. His time with La Suisse and Fulham : limited options, do your best with what you have. His time at the Poool and England : no grand plan on playing style, cultural dogma on who to pick ( "golden generations" , sponsors etc) .
Hodgson is a waste of space. No great tactics, no man management and not a great motivator. Get him out.
And replace with whom? As long as the FA are hell-bent on 'English for England', who else is there when Alan Pardew is the highest ranking english manager out there?
I've not been impressed, despite his respectable record in qualifying. He seems rather unambitious and uninspiring, unfortunately. Seems like a reasonable enough man, but is that enough? CK's right about the lack of a worthwhile replacement, I think. Even if you pick a non-English coach to take over, who is available and a probable upgrade? Van Gaal, anyone?
That is not the criteria. As I have said, the FA are the international version of the Goons. As long as their prime aims are met, the manager does not cause them grief and takes all the flak for on-pitch performance instead of them, you get the likes of Woy. When some of these FA nobodies have to start falling on their swords with no financial recompense, when England do their tournament usual, nothing will change.
