What has been killing football? Back in the 70's it was first and foremost, the rise of HOOLIGANISM, but also a decaying infrastructure (stadiums) and unemployment and inflation. These problems continued in the 1980s, with some high-profile disasters (Heysel, Hillsbrough, Valley Parade), but we also had Thatcher's contempt for football and culture to contend with. From 1992, we've had Sky, the Champions League, autocratic chairmen, corrupt FIFA officials, football agents, mercenary footballers, plastic fans, the ever-decreasing status of the FA Cup, Arab and Russian zillionaires, corporate greed, cheerleading troupes and match day officials shouting at us to "MAKE SOME NOISE". Some people love some of these new aspects of football. I hate them all.
