The knowledgeable European football fan usually is in the know about Le Tissier, and perplexed how few caps he got. Perhaps the award acknowledges the thought he sacrificed caps playing for his local(ish) club. Just as Sweden enjoys handing out the Noble prizes. Bilbao want to be seen globally as the spiritual home of loyalty, at odds with the established elite. It's quite clever.
Bilbao also knocked up a nice video of MLT's career and some of his best goals - which was played on their big screen at half-time.
I have seen players who can also score consistently like Matty, but no one could score goals like that on a regular basis. Not just a great scorer of goals, but a scorer of great goals. Doesn't matter how many times you see them, you still can't quite grasp how he does it. Sometimes it looks like he has the ball attached to his foot by a short piece of elastic. There will never be his like again.
Just had bit on Sky and Matty recounted the link between Saints and Bilbao....nice to get that out there.
Well done Bilbao, nice to see football appreciating something truly special, rather than the sometimes selfish things.
http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/news/arti...s-one-club-man-award-from-bilbao-2430187.aspx From the OS about Matty's award....wouldn't have been reported in the Don's day.
Found this - footage from Bilbao of Matt visiting their ground and going out on the pitch, from his view. Amazing reception, all things considered.
They really have taken to Matty. Guess we'd better take a shine to Athletic Bilbao. It would only be polite to do so. Matty's other red and white striped club.
Oh well done Athletic Bilbao ! Amazing gesture to make our own Matt Le Tissier such a guest of honour, all because of his loyalty to SFC. I'm def supporting Bilbao now, esp given their link to Saints with regard to their strip and we both play in red & white stripes.
And the fact that a representative from Bilbao came to GB and 50 Saints kits were eventually bought. This happened during the time that Saints wore dark blue shorts, which is possibly why Bilbao do to this day, although they did wear blue before adopting the new red & white stripes.
Have you heard the story about the Saints player who introduced football to South America..? It's true as well.
