Riviere looked Pardewed last season according to French football experts. Pardew's arm has grown long...

I thought we did well today - we just need a forward, and, if possible, a LB and CB to replace Williamson. Colo and Colback were excellent today, real calming influences in there. We look fairly solid, and at least created today. Looking forward to seeing De Jong get more game time, as he looks to have good movement, and was unlucky that shot didn't come back to him.

Decent point, but we need a win against Palace next week in order for it to be a good start.

How the **** was Hutton MOTM by the way?

I'm in the positive camp too. The back 4 look ok although they get drawn to the ball a bit too much. Just need to work out how to break teams down better. Then again you see Arsenal and Chelsea struggling to break down teams set up to hit in the break. They must have had all their players in there half for the majority of the match, certainly the second half.

We'll improve in the final third, just get the strikers a couple of goals and they'll relax and get in the right places

Well **** me sideways and blow me down with a hairdryer.

I'm sat here pulling my hair out at all the reactionary and negative hype that is being spouted and finally a voice of calm and common sense appears and its BRS.

I agree with your post 100%. Think I'm off for a lie down now <laugh>

I agree that righting off players or declaring our inevitable relegation after two games is nonsense. The level of annoyance is probably so high because languid attacking play is a trademark of our team over so much of Pardew's time here, not just whilst we've had new players gelling. It's hard to trust that things will improve much on that score even once the team is fully settled or even if we sign a new number one striker. Personally I think we will do ok this season, and do better against teams that try to play against us and leave more space for our counter attack. Cabella and de Jong, once settled, may make us more effective at breaking down defensive sides like Villa... We'll have to wait and see.

The problem is, considering how awful we were at the back end of last season, we can't really afford to hope this eventually works out, or we're going to be in trouble. Cabella especially does not look like a great addition to me. Great, we have a guy who's willing to take all the set-pieces, but he's not actually improved any aspect of our play, and that's not about gelling, that's about simply not being good enough at this level. Are the corners and free-kicks different in France than England? Is whipping in a cross a different skill?

Our best player is rotting. Some criticised Ben Arfa for not being great every game. On his worst day, he was better than Cabella so far.

On his best day HBA was better than anyone, but on his worst days he was really bad. Far worse than Cabella has been in his first two performances.

Can't agree with this as Ben Arfa on his worst day would give the ball away in a dangerous position and we lose 1-0. On his best day Ben Arfa is better than Cabella. On his worst day he is worse.

We were shocking at the end of last season I know. The thing is to fix it we had to have a massive injection of new players. I get what people are saying about not trusting Pardew to get the best out of them when they gel, I really do. The thing is, at the minute what things look like if he is doing everything right to fix last season is only really a goalscorer different that what we are seeing so far. We're assuming the worst and writing players off - whether that's Cabella, Riviere or anyone else before they've had time to adjust and before the team has had time to adjust to them.

A team looking to finish between 8th and 10th would expect to pick a point up at Villa, but hope for 3. We were the better team but we didn't break them down. We never really looked like conceding either. Some of us have spent the summer talking up Vlaar and saying what a good signing he'd make and now we're moaning that our new signing couldn't get the better of him.
