Not satisfied with cloning a Merc once, they’ve now cloned a Red Bull All joking aside though- fascinated to see if they can generate a significant step forward in performance. We haven’t seen huge sidepod changes from anyone else yet have we? Wonder if these sidepods reduce porpoising same as Red Bull have managed? If they do, that might set a precedent for many other teams.
So can you guys help me understand whats the clever trick they’ve done with this? I know Sky have looked at it but I wasn’t able to listen in - Vettel looked decent in FP2 aswell. These guys are a team to watch next year and year after with Dan Fallows behind the scenes
I guess having end plates on the wing stop the pressurised air 'falling' off the sides - so I guess it increases downforce - therefore they can have a shallower angle of attack on the wing providing as much downforce as a normal 2022 wing without the end fences. So therefor it should reduce drag in quite a significant way leading to higher straight line speeds. It looks like the rules spec a upper radius and a radius under the wing element (see curves on wing) but I am surprised that the box where the wing element is allowed extends down low enough to allow what they have done. I am very surprised that none of the other teams have taken advantage of this hole in the regs - if it exists that is. It will be interesting to see if it runs in Quali as I think that's the first point teams can protest things. i.e. Merc adding an extra floor support in fp1 and then abandoning it as the other teams were going to protest as they made designed and fitted it was too quickly after the tech reg came out. If it is legal and the FIA have agreed it is then can the scrutineers reject it? FIA must be seething as this will increase the upwash behind the Astons making following them more difficult! All very interesting....
Aston are saying this is all approved so really it sounds that they won't be seeing too many appeals. The merc crap body work was the same. It was approved.
I note that Seb could follow Lance closely for quite a while today, so fears the new rear wing might undo the intent of the rules appear unfounded.
££££ lots of it I would guess or maybe he just knows that Alpine aren't expanding investment whereas Aston are planning for the future - new facilities coming on line soon I think and new staff etc... Might just look better chance of getting better car and a last chance to win.
They ( Alpine ) had their chance ! Aston APPEAR to be going places . and as has been suggested he will probably be on BIG money . still , he’s not my fav as a person , I know that means bugger all as I will also be the first to say he is a brilliant driver / racer . but to move to Lawrence and Lance
Maybe. If it’s about money I’d be disappointed as I’ve always considered him to be a racer first and foremost.
Hmm I wonder if vettel storming out of the driver briefing over Alonso was actually something to do with knowing he has taken his seat
Alonso driving two or three years of Dan Fallows-designed Aston Martins. Now we’re talking. GO FERNANDO! How can we deny him a couple of seasons fighting at the front?! Think he’s caught Aston at the perfect time and will shut up those laughing at his historical career choices. Just a shame that the billionaire brat is in the other seat, blocking other talents. I actually half expected Ricciardo to sign with them having worked with Fallows at Red Bull but this is seriously exciting! He’s still proving himself one of the best on the grid. Just hope he gets a car to put him further forward.
I was sceptical at Alonso coming back but he has shown he still has it. I like Vettel as a person but as a driver he has at best been mediocre for many years. Might Alonso put Lance very much in the shade?
