News from Australia, it has been confirmed that BLACK CAVIAR has been booked to Darley's EXCEED AND EXCEL for her first mating.

Also, SEA THE STARS has finally had his first winner. See the dedicated SEA THE STARS thread for more info.

PN, do you own a pair of denim shorts?

On a more serious note can you tell us anything about UNITED's progeny. The first foal I saw pictures of was gorgeous. Any news on it and have there been any more?

UNITED's first foal was a filly by Shirocco born in 2011. She was offered for sale at the Tattersalls December foal sale last year but failed to reach her reserve, only attracting a bid of 14,500gns.

In 2012 she produced a colt by Black Sam Bellamy and was due to Rail Link for 2013.

Nicely swerved...

Do you know whether the industry is happy with the Sea The Stars first crop ? Seems a very slow start.

The Thoroughbred costings are put at £10,000 to raise a foal from birth to sell as a yearling, so about £5k per year. This covers board, feed, farrier, vet, insurance and sales prep.

I've been checking yearling sales entries this week and have seen plenty of Rip Van Winkle's and Zoffany's entered. Not too many Alfred Nobel's so far, but I'm sure they will be out.

Canford Cliff's first crop are still only foals so there will be a handful of them selling at the back end of the year, but they won't hit the racecourse until 2015.

I see So You Think has his first foal on the ground (colt out of Soft Landings born 25th July). PN am I right in thinking the Australian Thoroughbred "birthday" is 1st August?

Janabelle, I thought that was the case, but suspect they must have a degree of flexibility, basing it on the covering date rather than birth date.

Mick, only the Doncaster Sales and Tattersalls Ireland are available so far. I check advance copies of the entries for the major sales through my job so have seen Book 1 of Tattersalls already, but it isn't actually due out till next week. Goffs Orby Sale is also a week or two off being ready.

Doncaster catalogues are here, both Premier Sale and St Leger Sale are available.

Tattersalls Ireland September Sale is also available here.

When I get a moment I'll do a write up for each sale.

Princess, I see that the tough old campaigner and nearly man, Youmzain (3 Arc seconds was it?) had 85 foals in his first crop. Any news on how things are going, what mares went to him and when his first foals will see a racecourse? Now that our mare has developed into a strapping specimen and a lovely brood mare, I'm really interested in using him as he's only 3,000 Euros live foal, he's not far from us and it would seem that the pedigree might tie in. Nothing decided; just thinking about it. Any info would be very helpful. I was thinking of Sinndar and then discovered that Youmzain, one of his sons, is only half the price (cough).

Ron, unfortunately as he is in France they don't produce a Return of Mares like that used in Britain and Ireland. The France Galop website might offer some information about the mares covered so I'll see what that says.

His first crop will be 2yos next year, so it will be interesting to see how they sell at the Sales, though the majority will sell in France I suspect.

They could be at the Deauville sales. Must find out when and see if we can get there.

Hmm. Doesn't appear to be any Youmzain yearlings in the Deauville August Sales. Sea The Stars, New Approach, Oasis Dream, Teofilo, Galileo, Montjeu, Motivator, Danehill, Makfi, Dansili and more. Better not go there. <laugh>

Yes, he's only had 3 sold to date - all as foals in France last year. They made €4000, €10,000 and €34,000 respectively.

While there are none in the Deauville Sale next month, there may be some in the Arqana October Sale.

There are a number listed on the France Galop website, but for some bizarre reason I can't link straight to his page. If you go to www.france-Galop.com (select English version) then:

1. Select Horseracing Professionals
2. Select Horseracing Prodessionals (again) and from the drop down menu select Public Access
3. Select Horses and Key Players
4. Select Progeny
5. Type in "Youmzain"
6. This will give you a list of all of the registered Youmzain progeny to date
