To put it mildly - Ashley has got himself in a bit of pickle here.
It's well known fact that he is a business man, money is his main driver.
Through some buy low sell high tactics with players going back to Carroll and beyond he has managed to just keep enough quality in the squad to keep us in the Premier League.
From this player trading he has made a lot of money and supposedly paid himself for the loan.
Being in the Premier league pays huge sums to him from Sky and all of the worldwide exposure to his SD brand is worth a lot of money too (although difficult to quantify because he doesn't pay to advertise like most companies)
All in all, financially he is doing pretty good out of owning the club.
So, we are now in deep ****.
He has a team looking like they will be relegated which will end the big pay days from Sky and the SD exposure - ok, there may be parachute payments but overall it will severly reduce his rewards and will reduce the value of the club when it does eventually go up for sale.
He can't keep on the way it is going now otherwise he will lose all the the afore mentioned income.
So what is he going to do about ?
He has a puppet manager who he can do seemingly anything with, but who is totally clueless and is
steering the club down like the Titanic. If he sticks with Pardew he knows the financial consequences not to mention owning a club which he can hardly attend matches because of the poisonous atmosphere - where is the fun in that ?
If he gets rid of Pardew he then has to convince another manager to take the job.
No decent manager would come in and work under the conditions Pardew has been under, they would need guarantees of funding, a say in transfers - basically they would want more control - to be their own man.
He might find another idiot to work like Pardew has but that wouldn't change things much either..
So Ashley - what do you do...
A. do nothing, keep Pardew and lose money
B. replace Pardew with another puppet and probably lose money
C. Change your ways, bring in a good manager, commit to funding the club properly and strive for success, excitement and winning ! No short term guarantees obviously, he can't change the squad till January by which time it could be too late to rescue this season.
Option C will cost him more and would definately not be his style based on his history so far but he'll
surely still make decent returns and potentially drive the value of the club higher eventually.
What do you think he will do ?
