Perhaps it's time to call up Chris Tavare, like they did with the late Ted Dexter, back in the day. Tavare could bat for days but never get off zero. He'd practically bore the opposition to death.

After today, surely Root can't say it's a bowling problem, clearly, we just don't have enough batsmen that are good enough at Test level. After the bowlers got us back into the game, the batsmen have thrown it away, unless there is some miracle tomorrow.
most of them think they're playing tip-and-run still because they're that used to not giving a toss about their wickets. not after a 20-20 or odi typical innings where you done good if you hit four or more boundaries and scored 20 plus in an innings of more runs that deliveries.
i blame the ecb's accountants and pen-pushers for the 1000000000000% abysmal "structure" of the season and the stupid efforts to have internationals in some format or other for as much of the season as possible to screw as much money from sponsors, fans, and armchair viewers as possible, while depriving england's players of all opportunities to play themselves back into some form. a bloody tour of bloody australia with no bloody warm-up games and straight into bloody half a bloody dozen bloody tests followed by half a dozen odis and then half a dozen 2020s then back home via the ipl, the ipa, the itv, and any other franchise tournament for teams with no history or tradition that only a monkey with adhd would have the remotest interest in following, so an entire tournament where the batsmen can go throw the bat at whatever comes, with no consequence, and the bowlers can make charitable contributions of 20 an over while not caring a jot because their bank accounts are being overfilled by tv viewers from countries with zero cricketing history.

australia turned a first innings lead of 82 into an innings win. only two smaller first innings leads have become innings wins in all test history.
Truly abysmal, white ball Cricket has ruined the Test game in our country, as "X" has said the cash registers are more important than the integrity of the game.
It's a real dilemma facing the game, the most talented players are being attracted to the shorter version of the game because of the money on offer. Ideally, you want a squad that only plays white-ball cricket and one that only plays red ball, but this is likely to have the lesser talented player going for the red ball.
However, the Aussies seemed to have found a way of doing it, why can't we????

Amazing how other countries manage to play the longer version and short versions equally well yet we seem to have to put all our eggs in one basket to the detriment of the other. Got to look at the management of things after this tbh, it's truly embarassing.. Giles, Smallwood, Thorpe all need to go, Root outstanding batsman, crap captain has to be replaced as head of the team and the ECB need to look and develop all forms of the game not just those they think will earn them the most cash.
