Bale's emergence as a forward player really was a fluke. He'd turned down a loan to some Champ club already before given his chance as the only left sided player still standing. My Spurs supporting mate felt we'd sold them a pup and would've been overjoyed to see him go. Compare to a certain Wayne Bridge who was converted to a rather spiffy left back by Dave Jones and his team in a far more considered manner.
