Went to Carisbrooke Grammar 1961-68. In the days of school caps and satchels. Getting bus from Stockton 10-30 via Station Town and points West.

I went to Sandown in 1969, so we would never have overlapped, on any sports field. However, you probably remember Carisbrooke teachers like Eddie Davies and Ash Wingham (sinks into reverie of 'good old days', before decimalisation)

Old Stocktonsaint, did you go to the Rochdale away game midweek in league 1? The one we lost 2-0? I'm sure I was talking to you outside the chippy before the game.

That old gadgy was me. I always pick the good games to go to. Didn't bother with Oldham i.e. 6-0. doh! Didn't this used to be a football thread? I must get to a home game one day.

Fortunately, "whom" cares not whether singular or plural.

Hadn't heard of that before but I like it.

Is this thread part of an OU module on grammar? Who/whom thought football could be so educational?

I thought so. My son and I were eating our chips on the kerb. Hope to bump into you again some day.

It's an Americanisation to personalise a country or team, and it gets my goat no end to be honest. "England is in trouble here" - well no, it's not, their national team are merely losing 4-0.

The best news all day is the possibility that Poyet will rotate his squad and play Dossena. Now that guy makes Fox look good!

I'm slightly worried by Scocco, purely because he's an unknown quantity, and he can hardly be less effective than Altidore.

Well, the whom thing is sorted then. And I'd never heard of Skitt's Law either, and I also like it.

I was at that game with my son. We went into the club bar and mixed with the home supporters who thought we were going to murder them. Wrong!
We said we were going to have one of the clubs pies and were advised not to but to go to the chipppy round the corner which we did. Very good they were too. Can remember the saints coaches turning up about 15 minutes before ko. Bad traffic. The crowd was about 2500 and we had the whole of one stand.Thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I now always look out for Rochdale results. Amazing to think that was a league game and look where we both are now.

Yeah, and I believe that it relates to the fact that the team's nickname in North America is generally considered to be its 'real' name. Thus, it results in the plural form ('the Blue Jays are a pathetic excuse for a baseball team'), but when using the place of origin you effectively treat the team as an extension of the city ('Toronto is hopelessly bad'). Conversely, in the UK the locale often is the official name, and consequently the plural is used.

I expect Fonte to be rested.

I don't like to be negative about Jos, I really like the guy, but I really do associate him with losing now. I'd rather we played Big Vic at centre back, or if Fonte really needs a rest then he can wait until West Ham when Lovren is back, Saturday isn't the time.

I posted the team I expect to play. I agree with you. I'd play Wanyama at centre back over Hooiveld. Wanyama right centre back and Yoshida left centre back.

This is why Fonte will probably be rested: http://web.stagram.com/p/654173843678432447_639689994
