    CB I think. I forgot Harrison as well. Think he's been on the bench a couple of times. Stephens has been injured so maybe still out?

    Although i'd like to see the strongest possible team, this might be the ideal game to see if Gaston can click with Dani with Gaston playing the #10 role. Rickie could start on the bench and be brought on at any time as the match situation dictates.

    I would like Dani and Gaston to play. If Gaston puts in a poor performance then I can't see any hope for him. This is the kind of game where he should impress the manager and finally show us what he can offer the team.

    Yes he should really take his chance. Sunderland will play Wes Brown and h's a long way from match fit.gaston and Danmbining ould be too much for him.

    Yeah, good point. Extra time we do not need, but it does look a very likely outcome.

    Jay Rodriguez is not a good penalty taker.

    Yep, Kids on the bench again which I think is a good move for the psychology of the team that starts. Having 1st teamers shows you don't have complete faith in their ability to get a result.

    Possibles

    GK: Davis, Gazzaniga or Cropper
    Def: Chambers, Hooiveld, Yoshida, Fox, Turnbull, Stephens(Inj?)
    Mid: Cork, Davis (Inj?), Reed, JWP
    Fwd: Ramirez, Lee, Isgrove, Rodriguez, Guly(Inj?), Osvaldo

    Can only see Rodriguez featuring from the team that played Saturday. The fitness of Guly/Davis will dictate whether JWP starts

    If you're going to rest first team players for Saturday it's got to be better doing a recovery at Staplewood and then leaving them on the sofa at home, instead of killing two days making the 5 billion mile journey to sit on the (far less comfortable) bench. I reckon a slightly stronger team than the previous rounds, around 5/6/7 changes.

    Random team guessing game:

    Davis
    Chambers any 2 cbs Shaw
    Cork Schneiderlin
    Guly Ramirez Davis
    Osvaldo(?)

    Bench: Boruc, some other cb, kids

    [h=3]Head-to-head[/h]
    • These sides have never met in the League Cup.
    • Southampton are without a win in the last five meetings (D3, L2).
    • The last two games at the Stadium of Light have ended 1-1 - the most recent of which came in the penultimate game of last season.
    [h=3]Sunderland[/h]
    • Sunderland have only scored one goal fewer (six) in their two League Cup games than they have managed in 10 Premier League matches.
    • The Black Cats are looking for their third consecutive League Cup victory at home.
    • Four of Sunderland's last five League Cup games against Premier League opposition have ended in defeat.
    • Sunderland have gone 14 games without a Premier League clean sheet, but they have not conceded a goal in five of their last eight home League Cup matches.
    [h=3]Southampton[/h]
    • Southampton have only conceded five goals in 12 games in all competitions this season.
    • Saints have scored seven goals in their two League Cup games this season.
    • Seven of Southampton's last eight League Cup ties against Premier League opposition have ended in defeat.
    • Gaston Ramirez has not started a Premier League game since 13 April but he has started - and scored - in both of Saints' League Cup encounters.

    This game will be so hard to call as both teams will be changed from the league sides. I think our back up players are strong if you are just swapping one or two for a league game, but not so sure if there are wholesale changes. Our strength is as a team that are used to playing together...they are almost telepathic. Too many changes and you lose match fitness. I'm sure Mauricio will make a lot of changes, but, if he is taking this seriously at all, he should have a strong bench of first team players. I won't blame him either way as a win against Hull is very important to keep us bobbing along at the top.
