I would love us to win some silverware and it seems it generally takes a rich owner for this to happen, although a 'cup' is a possibility without one. If you want league titles and/or Champions League, big money is required. This is going to be the case unless some levelling up 'a la American Football' takes root. There has also been some talk in the papers in the past couple of days of a European top teams break away. That will move Sunderland further away from where big TV money is. So OK perhaps I will have to settle for a 'traditional club' and be permanently below the top tier? Also the problem I have with the traditional concept is frankly the money payed to the players, usually more in a week than a supporter earns in a year and the number of overseas players in the team takes it away from being local and therefore identifying with the players just does not happen...so I doubt their are that many traditional clubs exist in the EPL, just the 'haves' and the 'have not so much'. On the flip side this means the EPL has just about the pick of the best world footballers with their skill on show week in week out. It is probably out hands to change this OR we just all have to stop our Sky subscription, to the football, rubgy, cricket, golf etc?.

I kind of hear what you are saying but disagree 100% as well OT.

If Sunderland won the FA Cup or League Cup pal, by whatever means, I would be like a pig in ****e and in the brief twilight hours, when I get up to take a leak, I'll have the regrets then. For the rest of the 99% of the time, I'd be ecstatic. When you dont win **** all for 40 years, I nick a baby's sweets if it meant winning a trophy.

We will never win over sky because we aren't fashionable enough. Its really hard, hard, hard graft for us. No national support from Sky. No media support at all - we aren't the team that should be doing well up here! Thats the Toon ffs!

But we are.... We are above them...have been the last 3 years.

Buying cheap, movin on for profit. Liverpool dont do that. Spurs don't do that....

Problem is, they hate us for it.

I LOVE IT! I FEEL LIKE THE FIGHTING URUK-KAI

    !!!!!!!!!!!!

Kill them all! WE ARE SUNDERLAND, SAY WE ARE SUN-DER-LAND

    you clap now.

I vary it quite a bit actually. If it's red I'm partial to a nice Rioja or Chianti. However, tonight it's a New World Chardonnay from South Africa. Nicely chilled, natch...

But surely every club that wins a trophy, buys it. All clubs 'buy' a squad of players, just happens that the Man City's, utd's and Chelsea's of this world spend more on players than we do.
You could say we bought the FA cup in 73 as we bought that team.
I don't care if we were to become a hated club if we spent like City, if we won trophies I'd be over the moon.
How exciting would it be to see some proper world class players playing for Sunderland ?

Don't understand your arguments, Bizarreknives. We will always spend more than, say, Rotherham because we have more fans, a bigger stadium, etc. But if Bill Gates came along and spent a billion pounds on their team they could win the Champions League. If trophies = spending cash then what's the point of it all?

If we played the mags in a Cup Final, would you want to win on the basis of how much we spent compared to them, or on the basis that we're pretty much the same and won it off them fair and square?

Doesn't matter how much we spend compared to anyone, if we beat them, we beat them fair and square.
As you say, I don't think you understand what I was saying.

You cannot keep paying £200,000 plus a week wages because sooner or later the owner will leave and then where would Man city be ?. I bet if Arsenal finished 5th they would only get 40,000 plus the following season. People knock our support but we were the 29th best supported team in europe last season.
