Top of league is fascinating. We are sixth, yet only one point behind Chelsea in second. Good showing from us, but also very tight. Even more reason to maintain GD...a good one could gain you a few places at the moment. We are only -1 on Chelsea. ManU and Everton on our heels...essential to win against Hull with difficult games coming up.
I agree. Chelsea and Arsenal both have difficult games against us - potential six-pointers - so they will be feeling the pressure. VIn
The article in the Express this morning was mainly about that goal, but in the middle the journo wrote that Southampton are a very impressive side...loved that.
Good piece in the Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/nov/03/premier-league-stoke-city-southampton Includes a list of all goalkeepers who have scored in professional football. I had forgotten that Peter Shilton actually got one against Southampton when Leicester beat us 5-1 in October 1967. Shilts was only 18 at the time!
I hadn't, and was waiting for MOTD or some such programme to bring that to everyone's attention, but they seem to be very much PL oriented these days, and nothing else. All I couldn't remember was the year. Our keeper was Campbell Forsyth and he swears the ball took a hard bounce on the white line of the penalty area, over his head and in. The rest of the pitch was soaking wet with storm rain. IIRC Shilts didn't go mad with celebration [keepers just don't get the personal practice] either. I might even have been there, but all the games from those days seem to blur into one. All I can distinguish is if a game was on a Wednesday night, 7.30pm kickoff, or if it was a 3pm Saturday slot. Notable that at 18 Shilton had already replaced Gordon Banks, who had gone to Stoke City [hence Begovic's comment that ...even Banksey hasn't done that], so Leicester were entirely confident in his ability.
Think I may take a dislike to Mark Crossley. He spoilt Le Tiss's 100% record of penalty scoring as well. Mind you, how on earth Matty missed the rebound, I'll never quite know.
Kinda made up for it in that game with the goal he did score mind you. I still count that as one of his best.
Is that the joyous half-volley with his left foot, across the goalmouth and into the opposite corner..?
One of my favourites too. Course, there are so many. We were so lucky to have such an outrageously skilful player. Unique, IMO.
