If we lost a game without scoring, I would prefer that we had had 10 unsuccessful shots on target than had had none. I would call the players a lot of silly billys (or similar) but would reflect that on another day we would have scored. Making chances and missing has to be better than unable to get a shot in. We have been prolific in creating chances for the last three seasons and it hasn't turned out too bad has it.
Just had another look at match highlights (had to have a fix to start the day)...the referee cut across Fox as he was about to receive the corner which subsequently led to the City goal. The check to Fox's run made the difference there.
It's not the lack of recognition that gets me, it's that someone finally phones the 606 programme, from Southampton, and who is obviously from the area [accent], knows all about ManU and, even when prompted, can't say one word about the team of the city he lives in. It's almost embarrassing.
But you know TSS, there are probably as many "plastic" Man U fans in Southampton as there are genuine Saints fans. Hard to believe, but I bet I'm right. They are everywhere, don't forget! I don't live anywhere near Southampton, but if Man U are on TV in my local they all come out of the woodwork. The Champions League final against Barcelona was particularly amusing in that respect, as was the FA Cup match against us when Chaplow fired his goal in.
In that case Chilco, I look forward to the many Saints strips that turn out in your local, in a few years, once Cortese's ambitions start coming to fruition.
This is probably where Nicola sees his extra fans coming from if he extends the stadium (if...I said). We are in a large catchment area...people will come to see a successful team and then can become attached. I remember with shame that my son was a ManU fan, until he realised when we were leading 1.0 that he didn't want ManU to equalise.
I bought my son an Arsenal shirt (I know, sorry) from a shop in Wood Green, North London, not that far from either White Hart Lane or The Emirates. I asked the guy on the till what they sold more of, Arsenal or Spurs shirts. He replied, "to be honest mate, we sell more Man Utd than those two put together."
To make a long story very short ['cause I've told it more than once], when I used to chair a weekly quiz night in my local pub in Egerton, Kent, I once did a hands up of football supporters from the two teams. Results were 5 Saints fans [me included], 2 Arsenal, a ManU and a Charlton fan. This was about 1997. A pretty fair result really.
Very true. I went to watch the Man Utd v Barcelona Champions League final in a pub in Plymouth with a Man Utd supporting mate...(who funnily enough is born and bred in London and has never been to see them play). Anyway the pub was packed with Man Utd 'supporters'. However I am pleased to say, that when we played them in the cup a few seasons ago there were about twice as many Saints supporters in the Plymouth Uni Students Union as there were Man Utd.
