About friggin' time. It only took the sporting world 40 or 50 years to acknowledge that head injuries are no joke. PCS may not be as glaring a long-term problem as in pro-wrestling, combat sports or the NFL, but the mindset must change down to youth level where it can be really dangerous for kids taking knocks to the head and playing on.
Yet how come he stayed on till HT? I might be wrong, but I thought the rule meant they had to be substituted ASAP?
Wasn't assessed until HT I guess. Players gonna play unless someone tells them not to. Upon assessment he was probably found to be struggling so was taken out.
I thought that the Saints physio was actually told he couldn't go on the pitch when Long first got taken out by Krul, because Foy didn't see it as a foul. If that's true it needs looking at.
Yeah, it was right in front of me, our physio was trying to get on but the ref said no, before our physio had a word at HT. Surprised more hasn't been made of it actually.
Concern over injury at youth football level needs to be heightened. I have coached for many years, and its not uncommon for a parent to "insist" that their little jonny/jennie plays on whatever the injury. It's the macho image that football creates that players have to play on even if their leg is broken in 8 places.
They're trying. Problem is, players need to be educated about it too. Ref probably didn't see direct contact to the head, no foul, Long got up so play on. Sounds strange to say but Long should have stayed down.
From what I saw, Long was treated by the physio pitch side and they did a vision test and he carried on until half time. On my stream at the start of the second half, they showed an Asian man at the edge of the tunnel with Long, (I presume was the doctor from his clothing), and said that Shane Long had been removed by Ronald Koeman on doctor's orders. Koeman said in his press conference I think, that "I had to take Shane off" or words to that effect.
That 'vision test' was done by an asian man ( I assume the same as you saw at half time) straight after Long went off after having treatment. Its a strange one that the same doctor seems to have said OK you can play on and then at half time had another go and said Sorry you can't. Unless you were seeing a replay of it at half time?
Long may have looked okay, but deteriorated and was subbed. Nothing odd about that...he tweeted afterwards that he had a sore head.
