I believe it was stated as being for handball by Clyne. But then, he was fouled.

    Mad.

It was unfortunate for Fox who had no chance to get out the way, but it was a penalty all the same.

Yep. They glossed over the 'foul' on motd (which if anything should have been a free kick in our favor), then went on to essentially say that because it was such a sweet strike by Cisse the linesman was right not to give it as offside...
I do however understand how it was missed by the linesman and on another day it wouldn't have mattered because those don't normally fly in. We were unlucky with the own goal and, to an extent, Newcastle's first because the ball rebounded off Boruc in between two saints players and straight to the only Newcastle player in the box. However, I don't want to seem like I'm clutching at straws. I still think Newcastle had the better of the play over the game and deserved to win. But with a little more luck it could quite easily have finished 2-2. Still, you win some, you lose some. We just have to go and take our frustrations out on Arrys QPR next!!

Don't think we'll have a tougher game for the rest of the run-in, and the fixtures next week look very good for us. We'll be fine.

Main thing is we didn't play badly. Luck turns around. I'm confident we have more than enough to stay up!

Boruc didn`t have a save to make all game - the only difference between the teams was a penalty and an own goal.

It was a very close game yesterday, and it could easily have went either way, Southampton battled hard from start to finish, and they made us work very hard.
I have learned to pay little or no attention to MOTD now, it's a pretty pointless programme other than you get to see the goals, they over edit the games at times, thus making their analysis of games worthless.
They did however point out and rightly so, Papisse Cisse's goal was offside, still a lovely strike though.
Well done to the travelling fans, excellent support. <ok>

Cheers LTF. Good luck for the rest of the season. Don't think you will need it though. Hopefully both our teams will get well clear of trouble!

Ok the penalty was his fault, and it sounded like he had an all-round mare, but (having finally seen it on MOTD2 last night) I felt a bit sorry for Fox on the OG and the stick he received from it.

Yes ok he could have used his right foot and knocked it out for a corner, but I don't blame him for wanting to use to left and trying to hit it clear in the other direction. I certainly didn't think he had the time on the ball that people were making out, especially as he was facing goal. It was just an unfortunate accident - and as their season's are going, it's one which inevitably involved Fox and Hooiveld.

I've never rated Fox from day one (my very first post was a bit of an anti-Fox effort - for which I took a bit of stick as I recall). Anyway, I wouldn't blame Fox for either of yesterdays goals. Hand balls are supposed to be deliberate. If he had reactions as quick as that he would be in superman territory, even more so as he wasn't even looking at the time!

Have to laugh at what Morgan said when asked about his celebration with the translator. He said that he shares with Gaston and the translator was in the room with them and said Morgan would score a goal. I now have an image of Morgan and Gaston sitting up in a double bed (like Morecombe and Wise) with the translator lying between them:)

Also note the interviewer is starting to say Mauricio in the Spanish way...Maurithio...so now we know.

A couple of people were mentioning after the Man City game, that Saints only won because of errors, to which I pointed out that it is very often the case in matches. Small errors can have large consequences, and blatant errors will be punished. You could say that Newcastle won by two obvious errors to nil if you want. It's still 4-2, just as Saints still beat Man City 3-1.

Well yesterday was a hell of a long day for me. The train back was delayed by 90 minutes after becoming overloaded and when I got back into London at 9pm there was the problem of the engineering works on the train line and so I had to get a bus which took 45 minutes to show up and then it took an hour on the bus to get back and I just collapsed into bed when I got back at 11. I don't blame Fox for the defeat - that would be totally unfair. The own goal was mainly down to wretched luck. I could see the handball from where I was stood however. The main plus side for me is that I get a refund on my train ticket!
