Article: Liverpool - Which positions need addressing? My Verdict

Digger was effectively a winger,Like Cristiano Ronaldo who played a similar position.Both came inside and others moved into their positions.Peter Beardsley covered for Digger when he moved centrally.It didn't look like he was a winger at times,because it looked like Liverpool played with an attacking trio of Beardleys Barnes and Aldridge,However it was set-up as a 4-4-2.

 

I'm arguing here for arguing's sake but Cally and Thomo were, to my mind the last true wing pairing that we had. Cally was great but Thompson had the pace and ball control to destroy any side by himself - his biggest failing was that by the time he'd beaten the wing half and the fullback and then besten the wing half again, the time for a cross had been and gone!

 

We've got Henderson and Kuyt for the right and Suarez for the left. We need one more wide player.

If N'Gog goes, we only have one proper centreforward. I'll take one of those.

I think Johnson is a great left back and that means Kelly can start on the right. We need a backup for leftback more than a starter. Although If we got a class leftback I guess Kelly could be eased in more slowly and provide cover.

Centremids we're sorted especially now that Aquilani is coming back. Lots of class in that part of the pitch.

not bothered about centrebacks really. I think we're more than good enough there but if you want another I wouldn't complain.

 

Steve Heighway was also a winger and so was Terry Mac,albeit right siders,so was Craig Johnston.

 

I forgot about Highway (how could I!). We have the same problem with Terry Mac and criag Johnson as we did with Digger in that they did not play as conventional wingers.

 

Ray Kennedy or Ronnie Whelan or Ray Houghton or Ian Callaghan weren't conventional wingers but they still played wide.Jimmy Case for a spell also played wide for a spell but wasn't a conventional winger either.
Ronnie Whelan was a right footed left sider,and Ray Kennedy was a converted centre forward who lost half a yard of pace.
I think we need one wide-man and someone like Terry Mac or Ian Callaghan that can get up and down the pitch as often as Jordans knickers go up and down on a Saturday night.
