I can criticise our lack of wide options, but it's impossible to criticise our defending this season. This really is starting to reach Strachan-Niemi-Claus-Killer levels.
Great victory! Only disappointment is again we didn't score when we could have. Shaw and Lallana both had absolutely fantastic chances, and Osvaldo had a couple of half-chances that maybe a striker of his calibre could do better with. Wanyama again looked clumsy at times and gave the ball away far too much. I'd have liked to see Cork on for him earlier but in the end we defended well. Liverpool's game plan from around 70 minutes was very odd. There was no pressure on the ball and we were able to pass the ball around unfettered for long periods. Reminds me of when we beat them last season. Thought the referee gave us more than them as well which is very unusual!
Is there a stranger team in football? We play with three strikers, we commit bodies forward, we rack up gaudy possession stats, we play a high line. And yet we still don't have a goal in open play, and we're winning thanks to the second-best defensive record in the PL (and Tottenham has only played four times). How the hell does that work!?
I said we could beat anyone on our day. If you don't let many in, you will win games. Well done, lads, especially Lovren and Boruc.
Not exactly, but granted. But i was suprised that people here were not as optimistic as i was about this match, i thought everything (coutinho's injury, 4 cb's, the way we play) went in our favor.
Says a lot about the club that pochettino was screaming for his team to get forward even in stoppage time. Very good win although liverpool weren't great and we had a bit of luck. Im really looking forward to watching that game as I feel most of liverpools poor play was through our good work. If clyne and Shaw can play 90 minutes every game we will do some serious damage this season they are an incredible fullback pairing.
I could honestly give a strong argument for Steven Davis as man of the match, he absolutely ran the show when he came on and let us just sit in Liverpool's half for the last 20 minutes!
That was an absolutely brilliant header by lovren, would have been a stonewall penalty for the defenders bear hug but he still managed to knock it downwards and away from mingolet.
Gutted I decided to be a nice brother and help look after her children as she is ill. Had a ticket and everything.
I know that Lovren got the goal, but Fonte was fantastic today and actually looked the more solid of the two. But that's a minor quibble. The defense was overall very good, and Clyne and Shaw also offered threats going forward. Exactly what you hope to see. Wanyama played well enough for me, still don't get the criticism. Not saying he was fantastic, but he was solid enough. Clean sheet away at Liverpool, what more do you want?
