Nigel is 6th and last season was 2nd...so he's slipping Another adage is that people are promoted to their level of incompetance. Don't think that will be true for Nigel...think he is a fast and willing learner and he and the team will grow next year. Billy Sharp has said on Player that the team know that they have to up their game to compete next season...so no resting on laurels there.
I would agree that it is a helpful indicator but beware the Peter Principle (see Fran's post above) as it could jump up and bite your bum. I think you also look at a range of abilities and personallity as well as attitude and Nigel passes them all with flying colours. He is going to be a great PL manager becoming the envy of all the other clubs and I wish him well as he is such a great guy. I was very impressed with his concern for his players at the end of the final game. He was impatient with the interviewer because he wanted to see his players back in safely from the hands of the celebrating fans.
Even though I see it all around me, I've never heard of that definition. How very true! Not in Nigel's case methinks, but otherwise a perfect summation of how local authorities have been run for decades!
I believe nowadays being a football manager isn't being a one man band like years ago! He's got a massive support staff which he can only add to with high level experienced coaching staff to help him make the important decisions. The players he bring in this season will be critical as they can make or break our first season back in the prem. The roller coaster ride is just about to start again with us staying up by goal difference lol I love it
Interesting that Brian McDermott is in 12th - whereas he has undoubtedly done a great job at Reading, I don`t think NA got enough credit for reaching the Prem with what was basically a League 1 side a year ago. A greater achievement, imo. And taking off my red coloured specs, and trying to look from a neutral perspective, Saints were generally the more pleasing team on the eye in last season.
