As I have said already, I really enjoyed your post and the fact that Pompey fans had to hear it all makes it even better!
I am an Economic's student, I would say that the degree is pretty irrelevant to my career, but to get to where I want to, I need to do it. I would consider Medecine, Law, Science's, Maths etc 'proper' degrees. Doing something like what you're doing 'because you enjoy it' is what's wrong with this country. As soon as these degree's are scrapped, the better.
Not gonna lie, I'm ****e at English. Always was my worst subject. The fact I'm Dyslexic never helped.
I assume that English degrees are worthless also? I can honestly say that most graduates end up having a degree which is has very little to with their final career, but I wouldn't criticise any subject. A degree is an achievement.
See your doing something you enjoy, if I was to study Medicine or Law I would do it because I want to and that I would enjoy it. I wouldn't want to get a job after uni that I won't enjoy. Thats why I am studying Sports Coaching. To be fair, its not just teaching someone to kick a ball. There's a lot of science in it like anatomy and physiology. Also as mentioned in the article pyschology in sport. 'As soon as these degree's are scrapped the better' you are having a laugh, whose going to coach at schools? whose going to help get people into sport? whose going to help improve the standard of sport in the country? COACHES!! You my friend are blinkered and failing to see the bigger picture. Now please refrain from speaking anymore as this is not part of my article so if you want to discuss the article please do!
OK Joey B, let's consider one of your examples. You gave maths as an example of a non-pointless degree. I did a maths degree because I quite like maths. I specialised in pure maths because I like abstraction and creating logical framework around sometimes seemingly arbitrary definitions. Is the stuff I studied in any way relevant to the world away from academia? Almost certainly not. All it does is teaches me logic and pedanticity. Sports coaching on the other hand is highly relevant to many walks of life. It is relevant obviously to sport, but it is also relevant to teaching and to business coaching. It is especially relevant to management as it is all about getting the best out of those you work with, and many skills and techniques used in motivating athletes can also be applied to the business world. It is useful for analysing scenarios and using evidence and data to build short and longer term future plans. It promotes confidence and public speaking. Add on to all of this the fact that SL Saint enjoys what he does, you can see that it is 'most definitely not pointless. In fact, I would argue that my specialisation in pure maths is far more pointless from a skills perspective.
Great! Another person with an Economics degree. Look at where all those great Economic graduates in Canary Wharf got this country so far..... Doing something one enjoys is the luxury that living in a wealthy country affords the educated. It doesn't mean the poster of this article isn't willing to graft in an alternative field until the opportunity in his chosen career becomes available.
There are much worse degrees out there - a degree in Sports coaching blows Photography and Dance out of the water. I'm doing a "proper" degree because I enjoy it, so I get the best of both worlds, apparently... On topic it's always great to know, nice to see Nigel does all this work and still likes to say he has the best job in the world, we really are lucky to have him. I just pray he isn't tempted away by a big team.
If Lady GuGu GaGa is a 'social event' then me getting up in the morning is a 'social event' and that should also be a degree.
I have several frineds who are sports coaches, without a degree. Going to uni to be a sports coach is pointless. But yes, Dance, Drama, Photography etc are even more pointless.
They've made this country incredible amounts of money. Without the banks this country would be massively in the ****. They deserve every bonus they get, and they need to have them. Without them they would wherever would pay the bonus and this country would rapidly decline.
Joey B, can I refer you again to my earlier post. It is not pointless, though you may be confusing pointless with necessary. Though there are many things for which going to university is not necessary, but can be interesting, helpful and rewarding, as well as providing valuable and unrivalled experience.
Indeed. People can study whatever they want for goodness sake, and often it acts as a kind of rite of passge for some. A little less judgement on peoples life choices is in order I feel.
Please stop quoting JoeyB as I try not to read anything he says. Seeing something by accident just ruins my whole day.
