2.00 Doncaster – MAGIC CITY (11/2 BOG)

A competitive nursery to start the St Leger meeting at Doncaster. The unexposed sorts are usually the ones worth looking at from a punting point of view but today I am going to take a different approach and go for MAGIC CITY. He has made seven racecourse appearances already this season and looked a potential star when running away with a Newbury maiden on debut, he clocked a very fast time that day and as result of how impressive he was that day he was sent off odds on favourite for his next three starts. Following those disappointing odds on defeats he has been sent off at 10/1- 5-1 and 14-1 in three subsequent races again failing to win any. Whilst he wasn’t disgraced in these decent races he certainly hasn’t shown that same sparkle as on debut and it disappointing he hasn’t won again since.

I am going to give him another chance today as I feel Richard Hughes looked after him in a big field race at York last time out, he was slowly away and had a bit of trouble in running before making only moderate headway late on in the race. He may not have been enjoying the soft ground that day either and with today’s description remaining Good to Firm, Good in places there should be no excuses. He goes beyond 6f for the first time this afternoon and judging by his fast finishing burst at Newmarket back in July the step up in distance should be in his favour. I wouldn't think a mark of 88 is beyond him and I expect a big run today

    2.35 Doncaster – GOLD CITY (9-4 BOG)

Only 5 runners for this conditions stakes race but there are still some nice types in here. Eureka sets the standard and this is more realistic following a creditable but well held 6th in the Richmond Stakes behind stablemate Harbour Watch last time out. However I do think he is vulnerable to improvers in the field and GOLD CITY is doing just that with each run. He was an impressive winner of a weak maiden at Leicester on debut and then went on to smash the 87 rated Evervescent by almost 4 lengths conceding 3lbs as well on only his second start. He put up his best effort to date last time out when finishing runner up in the Ripon Champions Two Yrs Old Trophy (Listed) behind a talented horse from the Brian Meehan stable (Gerfalcon rated 95). There was plenty to like about the way Gold City travelled in to the race that day before taking up the running readily. He was just out battled towards the finish and this effort came on perhaps unfavoured soft ground. Frankie Dettori is back on board today and with further improvement expected I think Gold City is the one to beat.

3.10 Doncaster – DINKUM DIAMOND 13-2 (BOG) (NAP)

I think this is a rather weak race for a listed heat and to be honest I will be disappointed if DINKUM DIAMOND doesn’t win this. Therefore I feel he is a cracking bet at around the 13-2 mark. Henry Candy has always held his sprinter in high regard and whilst he hasn’t always delivered on his obvious potential this looks a good chance to get another Listed win. A winner on debut as a juvenile Dinkum Diamond took the step up to listed class in his stride when winning the National Stakes on only his second racecourse appearance. He ran a further 4 times as a 2yo all in Group company with a highlight being when finishing runner up to the prolific Zebedee in the Flying Childers at this meeting last year.

Dinkum Diamond returned to the track as a 3yo when contesting a Listed Heat at Newmarket and was perhaps an unlucky loser as he had no gap at a crucial stage before running on strongly at the finish, to get beaten only a neck and a nose by two very good horses (Genki and Ivor Bridge Lad). Although finishing 3rd next time out at Newbury this was a disappointing effort to have been beaten 8 lengths with a 99 rated horse 2 ½ lengths in front of him. He followed that up with a very solid effort behind subsequent Group 1 Nunthorpe winner Margot Did at Sandown and shaped better than the 5 lengths winning distance would suggest, he had nowhere to go for long stages of the race and the winner who is obviously very talented got clear first run and was not for catching.

Dinkum Diamond made the most of a drop in class when winning a conditions race comfortably at Newmarket back in July and followed that effort up with a staying on 3rd in a Listed Heat at Beverley 11 days ago. He travelled well that day but struggled to get past all the way leader Tangerine Trees and Duchess Dora (runs again here today). However I don’t feel that Dane O’Neill was at his best that day and those in front him at Beverley certainly had the rail advantage. With more luck in running today I am confident he will win.

    4.20 Doncaster – ZEITOPER 11-2 (BOG)

A good conditions stake race here and I have finally decided to leave Elusive Pimpernel alone (watch him hack up now). He has had enough chances and I will be taking him on with ZEITOPER. Unbeaten as a juvenile from three starts (including a Group 3 at Longchamp) he has since switched from Saeed Bin Suroor to Mohammed Al Zarooni. Despite a 459 day absence this horse showed he has a touch of class when a fine third in a hot handicap at the Meydan Festival . He has obviously had his problems but this horse was once talked about as a genuine Derby contender and the fact he has already shown he has retained plenty of his ability is a big factor in me backing him this afternoon, I do feel 11/2 is a cracking price considering he is versatile in regards to Ground/Distance. He has been off for another 230 days but he should be fit enough to go here and as such a lightly raced horse he has to be open to plenty of improvement. Frankie Dettori takes the ride and hopefully he will give me a good run.

Sahara Sun as an interesting recruit for Luca Cumani, however it is almost impossible for me to get a fair idea of his form without a lot of guesswork. He has come over from Chile and finished runner up in a Group 1 race when last seen for his old yard. He could be anything and is feared along with the John Gosden trained Fallen Idol .

Afternoon, pilgrims. Nice racing today at Doncaster but the card does look very difficult from a punting perspective. I'll tentatively nominate one at the meet. An 11 year-old with current form of 08678 running in the old 'lucky last'!

Indian Trail (5.20 Doncaster) - a somewhat hesitant selection and definitely a minimum stakes one but this old fave does look most deffo overpriced at 22/1. Isn't the force of old but still looks capable of going close here off a mark of 82 (at his peak was as high as 107). Although Indian Trail hasn't won for over 2 years he has put up some good efforts in defeat (including a close 3rd in this corresponding heat last term) and was less than 3 lengths off the winner on his returning to the track, after a 10 week break, at Epsom last time. Hopefully will reward each-way support this afternoon.

    Good luck to everyone.

SBC---totally agree with your comment on the review thread about not a lot of humour about (apart from GDCs tips and selections).
a bit robotic at times and not enought of the human touch element. only seems to be the likes of nass, oddy and sbc who attempt a bit of witisisum and tongue in cheek humour.--but who am i to say as i am just an unintelligent out of work loafer.

the last race at kempton park sees the best bet of the week running.the top weight,ex-irish--SEE THE SMILE ridden by mr jamie spencer,is xmas come early.

rainbowview, there was a tip going around for Tangerine Trees when it won the Beverley Bullet on August BH weekend. I left it alone as its last two runs were ducks’ eggs although it had won at Newmarket at the start of the season. Dinkum Diamond had a poor draw – low essential at Beverley as the five furlong course is a dog-leg – and that probably cost it the race. Beverley is not normally a front-runner’s track because of the uphill finish.

As well as Duchess Dora, it is notable that Captain Dunne also re-opposes even though he was a length behind and is only a pound better off. Also-ran Breathless Kiss is also in the field.

<laugh> That was a ride as bad as the horse under him. Hughes never gave it a chance. Give him the cruelest cut and perhaps give the horse the same.

Not very often I complain about Hughes but my God that looked to me like Magic City was laughing at them all.

Why didn't he take him to his left and get in the clear?

rainbowview, I left the ‘Bullet’ alone on the day because Captain Dunne was the best horse in the race on ratings, following his close-up run in the Nunthorpe (G1) the previous week, but he was drawn out on the Westwood with the cows and sheep. If there is no big draw advantage at Doncaster, perhaps Tim Easterby is re-opposing for good reason. He did have it entered in a Group 3 at Longchamp on Sunday but took it out this morning.

  17. Have to agree with you all, Magic City was going as well as any but didnt get the gap he needed and ran on well when he saw daylight, not the most impressive of rides by Dickie boy :-(

  20. MIB i can see the logic in your selection there, looks to have a nice EW shout. But i see no logic in your constant abuse of GDC who adds great value to the forum. Give it a break and get back to throwing your arra's and downing the pints you loafer ;-)
