The problem here is not the manager or the players. It is the lack of passion from our owners. When was the last time you saw them invade the pitch, armed, and demand a decision is over-ruled? http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/43369490
I wonder why the bond between fans and goalies is so strong? I guess us fans know what a thankless job it is most of the time. I remember in the playground no one wanted to go in goal. You wanted to score goals. So the slowest fattest kid, with zero keeper skills, got shuved between the posts (or two piles of jumpers/sweaters). Maybe that memory hangs on in the deep recesses of the mind. A guilt thing At pro level of course the goalie can be the hero but you still hear commentators more often than not saying "he should have stopped that", "his positioning was bad", and "you should never get beaten from 25 yards" But gommie is not only a goalie but a real character. So just hope this is not the end - even if we seem to have found a great replacement. A club needs characters.
i think he is liked so much because he has saved use on at least 3 out of 4 seasons and he shows the fans how much he enjoys playing for us
Sometimes I volunteered to take over the goalie role especially when we were getting hammered, it was where all the action was and I think I did a slightly better job than the "fat bloke" - we just got less hammered!
Not sure about professional from Gomes - that would have been to keep off twitter and let the manager explain. Or not. Either way, his silence would be golden. Personally I do not see much more of a playing future for him here. I think a lot depends on whether we can agree a fee for Karnezis, how good the new Swedish lad is in pre-season and the consideration of Bachmann. Gomes has been an excellent servant and I just wonder if the time is to shunt him towards coaching, although I think he wants to be an agent? Well, that is where the money is.
My guess is that Gracia was told by senior management that now Karnezis has come good, he is the long term plan for number 1. Therefore, if Gracia thinks Gomes is the best option now, he should start Gomes, but if not there is no value having him on the bench as it is better to have a look at Bachmann if he needs to come on and possibly be the regular back-up next season. Of course, this could be nonsense and he could just be causing trouble by demanding to be first choice again behind the scenes. In my opinion, the best back-up goalies are older professionals who are happy to sit on the bench and be there when needed, rather than a young keeper whose career is stalled by not playing. Even if Gomes is no longer number 1, we should keep him as our second choice.
This is all about man management .I cannot think of any other player that has done more to keep us in the EPL and because of that the fans love him ,So the manager should sit down with him and plan the best way forward for the club and him
