Just seen Wilshere's interview at the England kit launch on SSN. He really is a miserable, boring ****. Also seems to think the Goons can win the league next year <laugh>

I'll leave you to work out the difference between, on the one hand, qualifying for a competition you've never qualified for ahead of a team able to massively outspend you and, on the other hand, a team who used to win league titles qualifying for the same old competition for the xth year in a row, scraping in ahead of a team who they massively outspend every year and have done for ages.

One team is on the way up. Arsenal are absolutely loving finishing fourth these days. That is obvious and it obviously says something. You imagine Man Utd or Chelsea or City celebrating 4th like that?

Yes Spurs would have celebrated 4th. For a team on the way up getting into the European Losers League is financially very important. But then we aren't used to turning up, playing some so-so team from Sweden as the PA system warbles about "The Champions!" and getting top money for it. Our seeding might mean we have to beat, say, the current European Champions and Italian Champions to earn our crust.

I don't see how you can claim you are on the up when you finished 4th last year, and 5th this year.

Because, as with my description of Arsenal as a team that used to win titles, my assesment of trjectory considers a time period greater than twelve months. In the last ten years the trajectory of the two teams is markedly opposite.

In the last 5 seasons Tottenham have spent £62M more on player purchases than Arsenal <ok>

It's actually less than £45m, which doesn't even make up for one season's wage bill difference. Ours was £90m and theirs was £143m.
Add on the other 4 seasons and we're talking about £200m more being spent on their squad for the difference of a point per season.

On top of all that we still find time to send our players to rescue Millwall every season. How generous are we?

Thanks, PNP, for dealing with that I sometimes forget that there are still people out there who think stuff as utterly wrong as that.

Spurs earn a lot less money than Arsenal and spend a LOT less money than Arsenal. Bloody ridiculous to think otherwise. But, y'know, it's easy to miss the importance of wages in modern, post-Bosman, post-FFP football. You hardly ever hear about player wages nowadays, do you?

    Good grief...

There is a huge disconnect here in that some clubs state their wages including ALL staff and some state just the playing staff. Liverpool and Arsenal include everyone at the club including the tea lady, so their wages look high. Spurs, ManU and Everton only list playing staff so their wage bill always looks low. Just lies, damn lies and statistics.

I've heard this repeated by Arsenal fans continually and I've yet to see anything to support it.
Given that Arsenal's wage bill is nearly equal to that of both Spurs and Everton combined, I also doubt that the tea lady's salary would make much of a difference.

So, the tea lady's wages have made all the difference then?...I know what you mean, but in the main, these ancillary people's wages are not going to make a huge difference to the disparity.

You beat me to it again, PNP! I love the idea that the tea lady's wages are distorting the figures! Or is it the kit man or groundsman? Spurs really should include their 50m a-year turnstile operators in the figures!

Oh my goodness me - the things that people can sort of think and then press buttons on a keyboard to express. It really is incredible.

HEADS UP FOR THOSE THAT HAVEN'T CAUGHT ON - FOOTBALLERS EARN A LOT OF MONEY. EVEN MORE THAN PEOPLE WHO ANSWER PHONES AT FOOTBALL STADIA. I KNOW! INCREDIBLE!

Their wage bill is the reason that C/L football is vital to them, one day they will fail to make it,the writing is on the wall, then how do they make ends meet, selling players
