Neither our youngsters nor our South American newbies can be expected to provide that sort of leadership. If we are relying on new signings like Barnes and Stacey, what does that say about our long-serving senior players?

 

It's not just leadership, it's a never say die attitude as well. Hanley and McLean have both and Sargent and Hernandez work tirelessly up front, but we need more of that to balance an otherwise very young squad.

Is it really a saga? We've barely heard anything, he hasn't been linked anywhere else, and the transfer window hasn't opened yet. His last fixture with Fulham was only last weekend.

That said, he wasn't in the Fulham squad for the final day of the season last weekend, and wasn't a pre-match injury doubt. I wouldn't be surprised if that was because there was no point risking him and jeopardising his free agency move.

Those long-serving senior players were good enough to win the league twice, which hardly suggests that they lacked a winning mentality. Isn't it possible that for the last two years there was a lack of managerial leadership, and that this is a more convincing explanation of the difference in outcome rather than the idea that winners on the pitch had suddenly become losers?

 

There's also the fact that McLean, Hanley and Gibson were all injured before those final 11 games and we were left with the youngest starting lineup this century. That showed the importance of their leadership and experience once it was lost. We went from one point off the play-offs to 13th as a result of that loss.

 

Agreed. The way we collapsed when these players were injured suggests that their leadership and experience was very important to the team. It can be argued that they are 'not PL level', but they had certainly proved that they were Championship level, and we missed them badly.

With a bit more research it seems he is primarily a left winger, not right as I said previously. Available on a free if they are relegated, they currently sit 2 points above relegation but the team behind them has a game in hand, with 1 and 2 games respectively remaining
