Armed Forces Day at Ibrox

I don't have a problem with Rangers wanting to show support for the Armed Forces but when it turns into a jingoistic free for all and we have the unedifying sight of men in uniform dancing around like twats at a song gloryfying the death of another i'm afraid it becomes embarassing and not a little disgusting.

Politics and football should never mix and whether we like it or not the Military are a political entity. I am firmly of the belief that Poppies on football shirts is acceptable because we are not honouring the Armed Forces per se, we are remembering the dead who fought for our liberty.

Armed Forces day in the UK is a sham, I refuse to take part , I want no refelcted glory simply because I wore a uniform, wearing a uniform does not make me special or a hero and that applies to the arses marching round Ibrox the other day.

Rangers show support for British forces. So whit? It's a British club.

Some, it seems, prefer to think it's an anti-Catholic/Irish agenda having the forces at Ibrox at all. Yes, there were fuds there doing things they shouldn't be doing in uniform. But, fuds are fuds, and there's always plenty of fuds at Ibrox.

I'm sure too, some would see the hubbub some are trying to make of it all as an anti-British agenda. How dare they show support for their own forces!

Can't disagree that the soldiers shouldn't have been doing what they did. They should be reprimanded for it. Other than that it's all a load of nonsense some are trying to turn into "a big thing".

 

Why the Military though? Why not the Fire Brigade or the St Andrew's Ambulance service, Police Scotland or Erskine Hospital?

I'm not buying it Gambol, Rangers going all misty-eyed and patriotic because some people are in uniform, Armed Forces day was in June, it's posturing by the current incumbents and i'm not having a go at them just because it's Rangers, the Yanks are the worst for this sort of crap and i've been equally scathing of them in the past for the way they wrap the American flag around everything.

Just because they acted like fannies doesn't mean they shouldn't have been there. The abseiling is a bit much, but I guess that's more for the kids to enjoy (And some of the *****loid grownups)

I've given the previous anecdote before.

At the turn of the century, the World Series was on Channel 5.

The intro to it was pure mega-militarised stars n bars stuff.

Tommy Boyd (mind him) was laughing at it - asked the American guy Chetwin to explain it - he said it was a display of patriotism. Boyd then says how ridiculous and insecure it was of Americans to show their national pride through their military and laughed at how that could never happen in any modern European country especially Britain as we all saw the damage such sentiment did in the 20th Century and that the military being involved in sporting events was "unthinkable" elsewhere - we have Remembrance Day which is a solemn and non-triumphalist event.

Fast forward through some teenagers being killed in Afghanistan and national attachment to the military has increased a million-fold - plenty of commentators have said that Remembrance Day has gone from a solemn, understated appreciation of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and has been turned into flag-waving nonsense by the more extreme British Nationalists in the country.

I still wear my poppy every year (both grandfathers in the RAF groundtroops - including the RC one born in NI) but every year I get more and more unsettled by the sentiment surrounding it.

My issue is not Rangers honouring the military at all. They're free to do so.

Singing about joining the YCV is not honouring the military at all and, to be frank, is disrespectful to both my grandfather and other RC relatives I had who fought for Britain but the post-72 YCV would've happily killed.

Before Saturday, no(Scottish person) on the Celtic board would've moaned about this stuff - poke fun, maybe.

But if any of you think that was "honouring our brave boys", you've lost all grip with who actually died in British uniforms in the past.

 

What were the soldiers doing?
