Grand Crus will win this easily, won't he? Likes Cheltenham, gave Big Bucks a proper race last season, unbeaten over fences, simply superb in the Feltham. Maybe his novice status makes him vulnerable, but it won't be a big field and he's never looked like falling yet.

Grands Crus isn't even a definate runner yet. I would hold fire until we get the final decs!! (RP had the story last night)
Not running him, swerving the race. Now thats why Antepost is so tricky, gutted I didn't go for a brave bet now, but its not worth the risk most of the time.

I would say that the RSA has to be the one for him now, you can't throw a Novice in against the seasoned pro's in the GC without a run out of Novice company, can you?

7/2 is therefore a massive price - if he runs he'll be 6/4, only Bobs Worth really stands up as a genuine challenger unless the Irish have got something I haven't seen yet ?
I am perplexed by this decision. The Argento looked the absolute ideal trial to see whether the Gold Cup was a realistic target. Neither of the big two, but plenty of the next tier to see where they stand.
If they fear a 'hard race' against this lot then surely he has little to no chance if he faces the big two, who appear some way clear on the available evidence.
I just cannot understand the reasoning at all. If I were looking to run a novice in the Gold Cup then I couldn't possibly have hoped for a more ideal trial than the Argento.

Certainly would be the class horse in the race, but I still worry that they might double six us all and go for another Novice race. I am a bit puzzled by what the Pipe yard do with horses, its the one yard I would hate to second guess.
Hopefully Captain Chris can now bring home the money. And I thought he was the risky one.
The last ante post bet I did was us to win the ashes in Australia.I secured 9/4 instead of the 7/4 available at the time of the first test.Both runners were definite starters!....Thats as far as my ante post risk goes.
I think Pipe has played this poorly,from a PR perspective,with an ante post book on offer all week and no indication until yestreday that GC wounldn't run.The excuse is baffling as far as I'm concerned.
It's roughly 50 days until the CGC so the hard race concern is tenuous,especially when he announced that the horse may run on the 11th of Feb.The ground at Cheltenham is gd/sft so makes the decision even more curious.
I don't think GC will stay 3m2.5f and has failed at both attempts over trips 3m+.He is much too exuberant in his running style imo.
Episodes like this always leave a bad taste in the mouth.I sympathise with those who have done their dough on the horse which had been particularly well supported earlier in the week.

In fairness to Pipe every piece that's been written about Grand Crus he has always said the Gold Cup is an option but no decision will be made until much nearer the time, he's never said that one or the other is a target/prefered option to my knowledge - I'd say pulling out of the Argento makes him now a 1/4 shot to take his place in the RSA, yesterday he would have been closer 4/6.
Nass mentioned another novice race and we discussed this a few weeks ago but the quality of the Jewson is a notch down from RSA for me and he would be close to odds on for the 2m 5f event.
It's still the RSA or Gold Cup I think but the odds of him lining up against Long Run and Kauto have lengthened somewhat....

Absolutely agree that the RSA looks much more likely now. If they were serious about the Gold Cup then the Argento looks the ideal trial to see where they stand.
The Owner, not Pipe, did suggest that he was favouring the Gold Cup 70/30 - Story. I said at the time that it sounds very much like it is the Owner's idea to go for the Gold Cup and not Pipe's. Perhaps Pipe is persuading them that it isn't such a great idea after all . . .
I would eat my proverbial hat if Grands Cru runs in the RSA Chase. If Grands Cru goes to Cheltenham would be fairly certain (given the Pipe's history) that he would run in the CGC. Personally I don't think the CGC is the race for him and were he with Mr Henderson or Mr Nicholls Grands Cru would be steered well wide of it but with the Pipe's, handling the horse, I think he'll be CGC bound.
They could actually be so convinced of the horses ability that they want to keep him for a good old punt in the CGC? If he came out and demolished the Argento field he would shorten massively for the CGC. But this way they pop him out for a novices chase at Newbury and then BANG he hoses up in the CGC and wins it for the next 4 years running.
