Just seen on the news about the latest horrific incident in Berlin

These Christmas markets are very popular in Germany - my wife and daughters visited one yesterday and as I looked at the photos they'd taken I remarked to my wife that it would be an ideal target for a terrorist attack. Just heard the driver is on the run ............ the mind boggles

Unfortunately this is now what we can all expect --a taste of terror that those in middle east have been getting for years --bush and Blair started this with their attack on Iraq ..........

Here's the latest update from Deutsche Welle on yet another cowardly attack against ordinary citizens of a country. This is supposed to be a happy time of year for Christian people in this world, and the Christkindlmarkt is very much a symbol of this happiness. I know, we have a big Christkindlmarkt in the centre of Munich and have especially fond memories of going there with my wife and our then very young daughter in years gone by:

My condolences to all those good people who have lost family and loved ones in this horrific incident. <rose><rose>

SH; balanced and well thought out opinion piece. I unfortunately scrolled down and read some of the comments.

On Channel 4 News we had the German Ambassador to the UK, Dr Peter Ammon, discussing the Berlin attack and the possible consequential political situation and bahaviour of the general public. A very impressive individual with a CV similar to my own (?).

Glad you and your friends and family are safe Oddy <smooch>

There's a very good article on the BBC website this morning talking about the risks of a similar attack in the UK and how we (due to our years of experience with the IRA threat and planning since 7/7) lead the way in counter-measures. Of course that's not to say that a determined maniac couldn't carry such an attack out.

Some folk have no idea at all Kenny. When something terrible like this incident happens, it flushes out large amounts of heated drivel, powered by extremely narrow, ill considered thought processes. They're instantly attracted to comment supporting their own warped opinions. The world is up to it's arm pits in bullshit, and sadly, a lot of people revel in it. Some of the guff floating around concerning the so called lack of support by the Arab States for the refugee crisis, is appalling. Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar have so far spent more than Germany, Canada, Japan, Australia, France and Italy combined. And I'm sure we've all heard the one. "But Saudi Arabia won't take a single refugee." Well that's because the refugee figures that we deal with are released by the the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the numbers they use come only from UNHCR signatories. The above four Arab countries are not UNHCR members, so what happens on the ground in those countries is not counted. The Saudi government has stated that it's had 2.5 million refugees pass through it's hands since 2011. That number is most likely well and truly exaggerated, but even the UNHCR puts the unofficial count at least around the half a million mark. And that's probably a very low ball estimate. There is a great deal of help being offered to the "Arab brothers and sisters in distress."

I think it's nigh on impossible to stop a rogue attacker from perpetrating an act of terror , yes the impact can be mitigated , and often discouraged , but sadly if a fanatic is determined then some poor inoccents are going to suffer . the conditions that give rise to such ideology are where it needs addressing , but since we have been arming and killing for years now in other people's countries , we cannot expect much change on that score .
the interests of big oil , allied to weaponry ( America being the biggest supplier ) and the need to control the whole sheebang drive this insane situation .
but this has been reality for millions in far off and until recently insulated ( from the west) countries , now some of these people are exporting a taste of terror upon us , all of a sudden our world seems very different -- it's not , but subjectively it is ........sadly , many more in all parts are going to suffer , until global capital is brought to heel this is an inevitable consequence of exploitation and imperialism .

Cyc; the most difficult thing is not getting sucked into either attempting to make a serious balanced comment on the subject matter or on the particular extreme comment which angers you or lowering yourself to making an equally ludicrous comment which exaggerates your own view. Usually successful unless it concerns my devotion to Led Zeppelin or the Bundesliga!

BK, like any other medium, Deutsche Welle has its fair share of dickheads making inane comments. Glad to say they are quick to delete the more insane comments. Some replies appear to be from outright Nazis who have temporarily crawled out of the woodwork.

I realise it is a cliche and a generalisation however the most extreme comments, on whatever worldwide news outlet I stumble across, seem to originate in the middle of and far from the Atlantic and Pacific coasts in the good ol' US of A!
