Pretty much all the European monarchies were inter-related so I don't really subscribe to this 'the Queen's a foreigner' stuff. Not that I'm a supporter of the monarchy either.
I would have said the answer from most Englishmen would be - "I'm proud to be English, but nobody else seems to be".
I wear my England shirts all the time, and go to the Londoner English pub and meet up with other brits for a pint I buy all the english products I can get my hands on and as proud an Englisman than you will ever meet. I even cry every summer when I see the coastline from the plane on my way over the pond but it's a bit easier for me cos I do'nt live there I suppose. Absence makes the heart grow fonder
I think you'll find British parentage(at least one parent) can be traced to at least the early 1700's(back to Frederick of Hanover), this Queen's not British thing is bollocks. She donated almost all her assets to the nation, that now generates enough income for the state to cover her costs and she's a popular figure internationally. In fact she's more than that, she's the most highly regarded head of state in the world. I understand that some people object to a monarchy on a point of principal, but I don't really understand why any more.
I think, unfortunately, patriotism has been hijacked by the far right. The Union Jack is no longer a symbol of Britain but instead a symbol of Britain's equivalent to this:
I suspect the Union Jack will be flying proudly all over the UK during the Olympics and the St.George will be flying all over during the Euro's, it's only a far right symbol if it's allowed to become one and if anything, it's been reclaimed recently.
Quality episode of South Park, Percy. It's just a shame you like Scrubs, otherwise you'd be marginally more likeable.
You what Febbos? Considering England take more fans than any other nation to a tournament in the football and we also travel on masse to other sporting events like the cricket and boxing and then there's the masses that travel to the crap events like rugby union and the olympics. You saw Bono ruin Jerusalem last night at Glastonbury, but also GSTQ, land of hope, rule britannia & glory are sung with gusto. I think England should be higher. Scotland should be up there and all. Very patriotic- saltires and rampant lions everywhere. But putting the two nations together we're very quick, as Britain, to celebrate armed forces days, mourn our dead soldiers/ national heroes, alot turn out in their numbers when it's occassions like the royal wedding. We also still have our own currency- thank god we never adopted the euro and kept the pound sterling. I'd say what let's us down is not celebrating our nation saints day and having people go out on st paddy's day instead. Plus the fact we're not much liked on the continent. Well maybe that's just by the French.
Well this is my 2,600th post which is kind of important. And I saved it up for here. Hope you Hull boys are honoured.
It's important to not take these things too seriously, I never do...... please log in to view this image
