If Wigan do go down they will be in deep sh*t. Their crowds are low now. They will struggle to get 6,000 in the championship. How long will DW continue to fund them. The championship will soon lead them to league 1.

Whelan: "I'll never sack Martinez as Wigan Boss". RM has been promised he will not be axed despite Wigan losing seven games in a row and dropping to the foot of the BPL. Outspoken club chairman Dave Whelan refuses to consider firing the Spanish boss despite the shocking run of form.

Now if you were to read it (like I did), my first thought - he'll be gone by the weekend. Famous last words and all that!!

Whelan went on to say "Roberto's position is never, ever in question. We stay together: I respect him, and I know I'm going to get 110% from Roberto every time the team take the field. Things are going against us but we have to keep battling on. 'My spirits are never down. We may be at the foot of the table right now, but we won't be at the end of the season."

Wow wouldn't I have liked to have a boss like that. Put the 2nd team out on Saturday, bank my wages, knowing my job is safe forever. He may have been one of the three Wigan amigo's, but could he be one of Dave Whelans' love children??

Robbie, best you start brushing down your TV suit, 'cos I reckon the FANS will make you walk very soon - even before Owen Coyle & Mick McCarthy.

Some very good posts on the subject, and I particularly agree with what Yankee has said. What I can't understand is how Martinez can't seem to replicate, what he did here at Swansea, which leads me to believe, that what he achieved here, was too some great extent down to the players we had, who should have perhaps been given more recognition to the way we developed the Spanish possession style of game. As regards Martinez, and Coyle, they must both, be hot candidates for the managerial merry-go-round, by the bookies. Taffvalerowdy makes a valid point too, they have only taken points off the Promoted Championship sides, so maybe it's a confidence thing with Wigan!.................

Should Martinez go I would guess that a positive spin would be put on it. Whelan is on record as saying that he would never sack RM even if Wigan was relegated but he might be forced to should finances and supporter's opinions dictate.

In that scenario, to save face for all concerned, it is likely that RM would insist on falling on his sword to save Whelan's blushes. Whelan, would of course, make all the proper noises about how much he wanted Roberto to stay but was unable to dissuade him from resigning. Just conjecture, of course, but there is certainly an interesting situation brewing up there.

As for RM in comparison with Buck, I tend to think that Buck's team doesn't attack as well as RM's or defend as well as Sousa's. On the other hand we do defend better than RM's team and attack better than Sousa's. Overall, Buck has found the balance we now have but there was certainly input from the other two guys.

From my pov, however, I have to say that the most FLUENT performance I have seen from us was against Fulham in the FA Cup where, somehow, Fulham fluked the luckiest 1-1 I had seen in a long, long time. It was so good that Tommy Docherty was moved to say that it was the finest game of football he had seen in 25 years. Now that is an accolade - and you can bet that he wasn't including Fulham in his praise.

Big advantage that bobby brown shoes had down here was that he knew the players inside out before he took the job! he knew we had boys that had good footballing skills and he knew all the strengths and weakness of every single player from first hand experience ,so it was easy for him to work out what was needed, what was possible and to add to it.

He will never have the same situation again so it will take him longer to figure out who/what fits and who/what doesnt , it goes to show that you also need some luck with youe signings and spending £5m quid doesnt garentee top quality! (though he could have had Pintado for £2m extra!!)

I wonder what Bobby is thinking, seeing us settle the way we have here, in the Prem. Ivor I was thinking very much the same last night regarding Martinez falling on his sword! Most that leave us, seem to fall by the wayside, if you know what I mean! ........................

Has Wigans pitch got any better recently? I recall playing them last year and the pitch was shocking considering they were a Prem outfit. Definately not condusive to a Bobby style of play.

Just proves that our groundsmen do an amazing job for a dual sport stadium

JUst did some digging and found it got relaid last year and Bobby was hailing it as the turning point in their fortunes last year.

Thats one excuse he can no longer use then!

The minute martinez joined wigan was the day everything would be undone by Steve Bruce and relegation was on the cards, If results did not go their way on the last day last season they would have gone down and would not be bottom of the premiership they would be bottom of the championship today. martinez one trick pony style of football failed in the latter end of the season with us and he has failed with the only system he knows at wigan,.....We play a different more productive passing game which is entertaining to watch. martinez style was boring and like watching paint dry and towards the end teams found it very easy to play against and we never won many at the end of his reign......I cant see any hope for wigan this season as martinez is so stubborn that he wont change.....I don't think he has the abilities anyway and thats why he in my book He is not a premiership manager.....

There's some truth in what you say there Dai, there was never a plan B with him, he never sorted the set pieces or defence out, and stubborn is not the word!........................

Don't really care. It won't be Rodgers! If he goes, Martinez may well return to his homeland imo.

If Wigan go down, is it worth a raid for any players??? Fair game and all that..... On a serious note though, I think Martinez has lost his way a little since moving to Wigan - As the thread suggests, they've struggled to adopt the passing game that Martinez is fond of and introduced to Swansea - So he's had to take a bit of a step back there. I think the team and Martinez needs to go out there and put an identity on the team's style and stick to it, which I believe is missing at the moment. Either way, sorry, but Wigan's misery and any other team's misery means more chance for Swans staying up and that's all that matters to me this season...

Watch out ... he has the vote of confidence and DW has said he will not get sacked. Maybe he expects the same loyalty in return and is hoping he will fall on his own sword if things don't turn around.

But then we all know a story about Martinez and his definitions/double standards of loyalty.
