It wouldn't be a midfield two though, it would be a three.

Rooney 9, Mata 10 behind him, Di Maria and Janzaj (or Young. Or even Nani were he to return) either side with Blind, Carrick and Herrera as a three man CM. Might lack a bit of genuine width but solid.

Shame for RVP but age does appear to have caught up with him. A couple of goals could sort his confidence out but right now we can't afford to persevere with him.

Rvp is still class but i see him similar to ruud. Slowed us down and didnt fit. We just dont play to his strengths now which is poaching.

Not sure Di Maria and Januzaj would hack it as wing backs in that system. Three CMs plus two wide plus two up from means we'd be playing three at the back, and the lack of genuine width could leave us very exposed on the counter.

If we're playing three in the middle then I think we'd need to sacrifice Januzaj to have a proper back four, or have Valencia and Shaw / Young as the wing backs.

**** sake, I can't ****ing count this morning!!

I conveniently forgot the goal keeper.

We definitely need a back four, back to the drawing board!

<laugh> Good work Chief

Tbh a 4231 with Blind or Carrick alongside Herrera would work for the majority of games we would be expected to dominate possession. Then sacrifice Mata or Januzaj and go 433 for games where we need an extra body in the middle of the park.

Either way, Rooney plays up front and RVP comes off the bench when needed, at least until Falcao is fit.

Looks a good formation. Bring on the next three matches. I will be pissed off if we do not get maximum points although defenders are falling like ninepins FFS.

That works for me too. .

One other thing which LVG managed to do this weekend was to deal with that record of not being able to beat a top 4 side away. Moyes has not been able to do it during his whole career and that record continued with United. It seemed like a psychological block, just like Arsene's block when playing United at home.

I think we are, once we get some of the players off the treatment table, we'll be unstoppable.

Can LVG take much credit for it though really? Wasn't it 1 shot on target all game?

Good result but the performance is nothing to get excited about.

I would disagree (****ing hate myself at the moment) it was a defensive display designed to frustrate and they did it well, it may have ended 0-0 but just like Jose at times the first job was not to lose a goal and hope that they get a bit of luck and grab one.

I think we have improved.. I think it's been difficult to judge by the fact we have had at one point what 11 players out. LV hasn't been able to have any consistency in fielding a stable side.. Collymore was tearing into us yesterday along with a few other sides that lvg or us fans can't use injuries as an excuse because we spent 150m well we bought one bang average defender and an up and coming defender and lost three of our back line for the last 7 years. We to me are in transition as we still have areas of the team that need strengthening. The main positive that I can see is we are looking to play more attacking football. Last season it looked like no one knew what they were doing and we didn't seem to ever seem to play with a game plan.

If we get strootman or Vidal or both, plus another CB I think we will start to progress. I think we are really only in 4th because everyone else are so bad this season.

You are like those Arsenal fans on their board. They are trying to console themselves that their team was s**t and that United was not better than them but just lucky. Of course there was an element of luck.

But what did people expect? with a defence decimated with injuries and getting worse even during the match with Shaw limping off, we were going to play better football than Arsenal? match them pass for pass?

Get real! even with a full strength side I would have wanted LVG to play counterattacking football. Ferguson was so damn successful with it each time he played Asrene even when Wenger had a very strong side. With our B side it was a no brainer .<ok>

EDIT: one of the reasons given on why United won was that the Arsenal team was really awful. Excuses included that one:

Arsenal were **** mate, they have nothing to console themselves with. And I accept you were perhaps forced into certain tactical manoeuvres given your injuries and taking all into account it was a great result. However I think on another day you could have easily lost that game.

It is good if the reason for a win against any top team is that they played ****. I'll take that any day. The time to worry is when a really crappy side plays really well against you . Ask the RS. Any opposition seems to play their best footy against them.
