If you think logically, it's pretty counterproductive. If we lived in a world where we could stay up continuously, the world would be a far more modern place than it is now.
I have been to several different ones and I have also taken my children. One thing that I have noticed is that it doesnt matter which continent you are on, some things are the same: 1: The engine noise (WOW)! At the start of a GP it is awesome and you will fill up - there is nothing like it! 2: Change of direction (Unbelievable)! Doesn't matter whether it is a street track or one of the speed tracks the grip levels are frightening, almost game like! 3: Crashes (Loud)! The smell of rubber and the crunch or carbon fibre all happens in slow motion and all the other sounds seem to fade out at that particular moment! 4: The Blur: Often seen in photos for magazine shoots but it is a wondeful sensation of speed close up. 5: Breaking/Gear Changes: Fierce, loud and stacato like - you almost wonder how the cars actually hold together for the race! 6: People: I never witnessed a sport like it, all fans from all countries mix in harmony and some very attractive women! As stated above, try and make it a holiday or at least a 5 day break you would probably be best to try one of the close european ones (I would recomend Spa) - they are close, you can camp (if you want to keep the costs down) and you could car share with a few mates to keep the cost down. The tickets are generally cheaper and if you ahve children they do kids tickets - which helps! All in all it is an experience you will never forget and I would even recommend it to a non F1 fan, because as a one off experience it is out of this world!
Thanks smithers, I enjoyed reading that, and the more answers like that the more I want to go. Silverstone is probably good for a proper english camping holiday and either Monza or Spa for an abroad holiday - and it would be hard to choose between them. I won't be going to any grand prix untill I have finished University though. Hopefully Adrian Newey will be less dominant by then
I'm (hopefully) going to be in Australia next year as part of my degree, and whilst I'll be in Brisbane, I know someone who should be in Melbourne, and is an F1 fan, so we're going to try and see the Grand Prix. Fingers crossed! What do you study sea-man?
Biochemistry, how about you? I hope you get your tickets, Melbourne is always such a good race and to quote james allen "the start of a new Formula 1 season is always a magical moment"
Albert park unbelievable place and beautiful and goes from being red hot at the start to quite chilly as the sun sets on the after race party - wonderful circuit IMO and they do some fantastic burgers aswell! Night life is good! I would pick Spa over Monza (especially as its long term prospects seem slimmer than Monza) for a short weekend (it will be cheaper and the atmosphere is a little more relaxed) - some crackin camping parties and its only a few of hours from the chunnel. Its a a very scenic place to hear the high pitched engines echo through the forest - although it is alittle remote! Monza is wonderful, a bit hetic and can be expensive! The park - again beautiful and walk in is quite an experience - look out for the old banked part of the original track! Milan is not far and the lakes are less than an hour away. Anyway enough of me harping on, you will love it! Just make sure you let us know about your first time!
hehe I sure will, I expect I will bore everyone I know to death about it when I'm off to see my first grand prix. And you have just about convinced me to do Spa in a motorhome haha That would be quite some way to celebrate graduation!!
Aaaah, very similar to me, I'm doing straight Chemistry. To be honest, I'd rather be doing biochemistry sometimes, I wouldn't have to deal with the quantum mechanics I'm currently wading through, but it's the polymer science which is hopefully going to get me involved in F1 somehow, so I can't complain! I'm in 2nd year at the moment, yourself?
As you're 18, are you looking at Uni's, or already there? I think I've got friends at most universities, so PM me if you have any questions, I'll try my best. I'm at the University of Sheffield at the moment, studying MChem Chemistry, although my third year should hopefully be at the University of Queensland in Brisbane.
I'm at university of Portsmouth and I'm in the killer 3rd year and all my lecures are 3 hours long!!!!!! And they are all 9:00am starts, not great news for the insomniac lol I've grown so much as a person while I've been at Uni though - I'm a much more confident person now
Fascinating stuff. Great to hear how you guys are getting on at Uni. - Almost makes me want to go back to my youth. It's also great to hear of the various 'other side of the fence' accounts of Spa, Monza and Melbourne. As far as spectating is concerned; well, I've only done Melbourne courtesy of friends who live close by. We flew in by helicopter and I swear no-one does it better than the Ozzies: they really know how to have a good time, which makes the venue one of the all-time favourites with spectators, teams and drivers alike. Spa on a budget sounds like fun too: Smithers' account makes me think of Le Mans, which is another 'must do' for any petrol-head. And Monza is mad - so long as you wear redâ¦
One of my close friends, who was not into F1 particyularly, had a business partner that took him to Valencia a few years ago, good tickets and the best passes money could buy, he's a big fan now, especially as he met a lot of the drivers thanks to adding a small piece of orange paper from a bin to his pass and just walking in with his newly made 'access all areas' pass
Hahaha, I promise you, I'll not tell Bernie! Actually, I once did something similar but I'm not telling you what it was!
