Lee Ryder: "Are you looking forward to playing the derby against Sunderland?"

    Aleksandr Mitrovic: "Who's Sunderland?"

    Brilliant!

You wouldn't have heard of him. He played in Europe. That's somewhere not in England for you folk. <ok>

    Open question:

Is this big(ger) spending a long term thing from Ashley in his quest to "Win something" or is this summer a one-off and you expect him to revert-to-tight and flog your better players when next summer comes around?

Be interesting for another Billionaire to start shelling out to challenge the 'elite' for want of a better word. He certainly appears to have cash to burn but I don't get the feeling he's in love enough to commit to that level of investment, consistently.

    Temporary action for two reasons.

    1. Prices for players and wages as well will significantly increase next year when the latest Sky money deal kicks in. Cashley is buying now, in his mind in advance (and not to make up for previous lack of investment) to avoid having to spend really big next year.

    2. He was frightened by the latest relegation scare which was a lot closer than he expected and the potential loss of money that would have followed again with next years Sky money hike on the horizon.

I think its's a bit of both Terry. I think its a slight change of direction. The policy has remained the same - buying young and buying potential. It's just that the parameters have changed. He's moved up a bracket or two in the young potential we are buying, paying more and hopefully having a better quality team while they develop and increase in value. This gives us more of a chance to win something, while still operating within our limits and not risking too much financial instability. As for selling players. we're still a selling club. We can't really complain about that though as (I think) only Man City and Chelsea aren't selling clubs over here. Even your lot will sell a first teamer if you get a stupid offer. Hopefully we've moved up a notch and now we're buying betting quality and hoping to sell higher up the chain too (which makes it both less likely to sell as many and also meaning we have more to re-invest when we do sell).

Don't think we'll ever see him invest enough to guarantee challenging the 'elite' big spenders on a regular basis, but as Southampton, Everton, and even ourselves a few seasons ago have proved, being in the bracket below the elite can give you a chance of challenging any elite teams having a poor season and stand an outside chance of top four now and again. We have still got a fair bit of investment and development to do before we're in the next bracket down, but at least its a promising start. As for winning something, then just fielding competitive teams and giving it a go will help in the cups where anything can happen if you give it a go.

Cherno More Varna and FK Cukaricki for example have both played in Europe this year. I suppose you will know all of their players then. (Exciting Friday night you had BTW)

Been to Varna. It's a ****hole. No I don't know their players, obviously. But I would have thought any football fan with a bit of knowledge would know who Mitro is. Then again, you lot have not interest in Europe, have you? He scored in the CL against Arsenal amongst other sides. "Genuine question?" Bit of a silly question really.

And I would wager my life is considerably more exciting than yours, sad lad. <ok>

Lens has scored in the Champions League and World Cup against Brazil, to be fair.
