Blimey, 34 years ago today. 0-0 against Spurs, at The Dell. It's OK, we were clear enough of the chasers, so a draw was fine. Funnily enough, I was only reading a little bit of Alan Ball's Playing Extra Time autobiography today, and it was the bit where Saints gained promotion.

Great season, but at no time do I remember being as nervous a this. Did anyone go to Luton away that year. 15000 crowd and 10000 from Southampton. We were marched up from town surrounded by police, dogs, the works. Brilliant!

Key to what..? A late goal in the 90th minute would do fine. I suspect medical assistance might be required for a few people by then though.

Imagine if West Ham were winning 4-0 at the time. No medical assistance for me, I'd be dead.

Remember the fixed draw with Spurs, most boring game I have seen.
Brighton were not happy.
Great away support , just like this season. I wonder if another 0-0 is on the cards and just gets us over the line with West Ham winning 3-0.
Best order lots and lots of smelling salts

Yes was there. Away support that season was brilliant. Took over most towns and grounds. seem to recall we took 5K to Bolton.

The night before the Spurs game the whole of Southampton were on alert. The Spurs fans had pretty much smashed up Brighton the week before and every dodgy geezer and his alsatian was out in case they should attempt to do the same to us. I remember being in the Painted Wagon and there were guys in ski masks just hoping a Spurs fan would walk in. One did as it happened, a mate of mine, ha ha no one found out thank goodness.

Actually it's the anniversary of the 1-1 at Orient that meant that barring a heavy defeat against Spurs we were up. Celebrations started early! There in lies the difference!

Bit of trivia - Leyton Orient have figured in the final stages of at least two [I'm not sure of more, but who knows..?] Saints promotions. Odd association. Are there any more quirky Saints associations like that..?
