The rules were drafted and put up as a sticky for several days late last August inviting members' comments etc. before Northolt formally adopted them for our board. Whilst it's true they were based on the Norwich set, I drafted ours to provide both an idea of minimum standards to be used in cases of dispute; and to inform members of the existence of such things as the PM system. The fact is, the word 'moderate' tells us everything we need to know to decide what is and isn't acceptable in the first instance. Thereafter, disputes on actions taken would more easily be decided by referring to the rule itself rather than the mood / bias of the mod taking the action. Take your example as a for instance: 'General (non-personalised) banter is fine but âwummingâ and/or trading insults is not'. This rule doesn't say I have to sanction an abuser - but justifies my actions if I judge it appropriate to do so. Personally, I prefer a light touch approach to moderating. That is to say that I would revert to the letter of the rule only in extreme cases. Anything else is no more than issuing (informal) words of advice or perhaps closing or deleting a thread once it's clear enough to most that it's going nowhere good. For this reason I would prefer such rules as we have are left in place for a rainy day - but that light touch action is left to the mod's judgement. It's a bit like a pull from the old bill in that sense, isn't it? Who needs to get into formal actions (aka 'work') if cautionary words are respected and thereby do the trick? It's worked fine to date. Your coat sir? You'll be needing it out Cannock way the way it's been tipping down today!!!
Case in point re. my response to Cannock above! We recently voted Swords and Col as angry sausages - but very entertaining! I'm sure the rules would have justified me doing all sorts to either (they've both gunned me in their time!!). Fact is though, our board works better with a few people prepared to fire from the lip from time to time. However both show great respect for our board and accept a tug when it's due. All good then. Col: I know exactly what does your nut in mate. I do enjoy teasing you about our donkey but tbh I feel the same way as y'all about our poor form and league position. Aaaaagh! Why d'you think I took last night off? Just didn't want to think, talk or deal with losing at home again... I wasn't surprised at your comments and knew exactly where you were coming from. Nothing to do with Norwich was it? They just happened to be there (lapping it up) at the time.
Hi Tooting. I can only close such threads if they originate on our board. Whilst I'd like to be able to, I can't stop our people OPing a thread and crossing it to other club boards. No powers in that area at all. It's been discussed on the mod board but it just ain't possible I'm afraid.
Thanks for the offer to become a mod Brix but on this occasion I feel I must decline All the best Cerny
No need to apologise Brixton and thanks for your efforts. Sorry for my comments about that lot from Norfolk regarding their toes.
Apology not required Brixton. I don't think anyone can or will mod like northy did. Tbh I wondered if it was his full-time job. All the mods on here do a sterling job, and I don't envy you in the least. Keep up the good work, it's much appreciated.
